Summary:
Under general direction provides pathology services for Alaska Native Medical Center.
Responsibilities:
- Assure proper specimen collection and submission prior to accessioning. Assist clinicians with specimen collection questions.
- Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and/or verification of unique patient identifiers.
- Obtain and review pertinent clinical information and history, including imaging studies, laboratory results, and operative records.
- Perform the macroscopic description and dissection of all surgical specimens ranging from simple to complex cases including pertinent macroscopic information for the staging of complex cancer cases.
- Preparations necessary for human post-mortem examination.
- Prepares tissue for frozen section for pathologist, not diagnosing, and other intra-operative consultation, within established protocol and procedural parameters.
- Participates in specimen storage and disposal, and the maintenance of reagents and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standard.
- Knowledge of accession, dissection, anatomical description, and histological sampling methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of pathology procedures, protocols, and techniques.
- Knowledge of procedures, regulations, and standards for the acquisition of human tissue samples.
- Knowledge of quality standards and requirements for pathology specimen photographs.
- Knowledge of biological specimen disposition, maintenance and storage procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of chemical reagents and equipment used in pathology.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.
- Skill in maintaining record keeping.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.
- Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.
- Ability to perform frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations.
- Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION:
Master’s degree as a Pathology Assistant and board certified/eligible. Progressively responsible professional/exempt work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION:
Non-supervisory - At least(one) 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION:
- Current certification from the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistant or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
