What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Mentor position at Alaska Mental Health Consumer Web?
POSITION PURPOSE
The Peer Mentor’s role is to provide peer support to members. The Executive Director supervises the Peer Mentor. A Peer Mentor is engaged in self-directed recovery and assists people with mental health issues in regaining control over their own lives and over their own recovery process. The Peer Mentor models competency in recovery and maintaining ongoing wellness.

PRIMARY DUTIES
- Facilitates intake for prospective members
- Facilitates prequalifying of members interested in being a BHAP applicant
- Mentors peer interns and volunteers
- Provides peer support and engage willing members in recovery discussions and one-on-one mentoring
- Works with members to set self-determined goals, monitor goals, progress, and outcomes
- Maintains an ongoing library of recovery resources, resource list and posts information about opportunities for involvement in local community events
- Works with the other Peer Mentors and Executive Director in organizing action programs, such as groups and speakers
- Work with the Executive Director and Administrative Assistant in compiling member demographics.
- Keep accurate and timely documentation of member interactions and group facilitation
- Works with the Administrative Assistant to find local resources such as food, housing, behavioral health professionals, employment resources, and medical care
- Works with Web volunteers and staff to do outreach in the community
MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Some college or Bachelor’s degree preferred
Must pass State of Alaska Background check prior to position offered
Driver's License and a clean driving record preferred
The Web is open on all holidays and on Saturdays. Work schedule will be full-time (40 hours per week) and will be arranged to meet the needs of The Web and the members we serve.
Experience:
- Prefer applicant to be a mental health member in recovery
- Must complete Peer Support program training by the 3rd month of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
An understanding of member-directed services and the member recovery process from mental illness and substance abuse. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, as are critical thinking, problem-solving, and attentiveness to detail while maintaining confidentiality.
