JOB TITLE: Custodian
DEPARTMENT: Maintenance
REPORTS TO: Custodian Coordinator, Vice President for Operations
STATUS: Part time (approx. 32 – 37.5 hrs per week; 52 weeks per year), Non-Exempt, Regular, Non-benefited
PURPOSE:
Responsible for the custodial maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning and restocking restrooms. Provides support services to the maintenance department as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Clean campus buildings (i.e. offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, common spaces, hallways, entries, etc.) by tidying furniture, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, vacuuming, steam cleaning, or shampooing.
- Gather, empty and remove all garbage on campus (inside and outside).
- Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
- Wipe mirrors and windows.
- Utilize chemicals and other treatments to prevent infestation by pests when necessary.
- Perform any combination of light housekeeping duties to maintain commercial. establishments in a clean and orderly manner. Duties may include making beds, replenishing linens, doing laundry, and cleaning rooms and halls.
- Clean, polish, dust furniture, fixtures, windows and mirrors and clean and maintain cooking, serving, and catering equipment according to company and manufacture specifications.
- Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors and closing windows.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
- Undertake a variety of custodial and janitorial tasks (shoveling snow from the sidewalk, lifting heavy items, moving chairs etc.).
- Report major damages to supervisor.
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings.

REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
One year of demonstrated experience working in a custodial capacity.
Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable.
Must be organized, efficient, and show good time management skills.

Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:

Must be willing to provide flexible support during the summer SOWERS guest season by assisting with housekeeping on an occasional Saturday when necessary due to emergency staffing shortages, temporary vacancies, or other operational needs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position is physically demanding and requires continuous movement throughout the workday. Employees are expected to spend the majority of their shift standing and walking while performing custodial duties.
Essential physical requirements include frequent walking; climbing and descending stairs; bending, kneeling, crouching, stooping, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, dirt, cleaning chemicals, loud noises, and other environmental conditions commonly associated with custodial and maintenance work. Employees are expected to follow all established safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
DRESS CODE:
Within the office, “business casual” dress is expected. Jeans are acceptable as long as they are clean and well-kept. If any questions arise regarding what is appropriate, speak with the supervisor.
