TITLE: ELL PARAPROFESSIONAL

Definition

A staff member who, under the supervision of assigned teacher, is responsible for assisting with individual students or small groups to help them achieve skill levels of the class as a whole.

Qualifications

• AA degree or equivalent of 2-year college, or pass proficiency exam
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Computer literate
• Experience working with children
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, parents and staff
• Must be able to fluently speak English and Spanish
  
  

Reports To

The classroom teacher to who assigned and/or building principal.

Job Goals

To assist the teacher in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole and to support the instructional process.

Responsibilities And Duties

• Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on sympathetic understanding of individual students, their language needs and abilities.
• Manages student behavior in a calm, positive, and professional way.
• Plans and prepares materials for independent study, small group, and remedial work assigned to students based on guidelines set forth by the teacher.
• Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher
• Assists with large group activities by circulating in the room to monitor and assist with student performance and behavior.
• Serves as a source of knowledge of the Spanish language and culture with the classroom.
• Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about assigned students as expected of the teachers.
• Communicates and cooperates in effective, professional manner with students, parents, teachers, school staff and the community.
• Keeps records of student work, test scores, attendance, etc. as specified by the teacher and the program.
• Participates in faculty meetings and in-service training programs as appropriate.
• Provides supervision of students outside the classroom as specified by duties.
• Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher.

• Number of days assigned annually.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and procedures.
