POSITION PURPOSE:     

The Lead School Nurse is to provide a robust health program for the assessment, evaluation, maintenance and improvement of the health of students. The Lead School Nurse will be responsible for ensuring compliance of all student records, developing and implementing policies and procedures, managing relationships with the school physical and health professionals, supervising nurses and administrative staff, and identifying areas of improvement to the care of students.  

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:     

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Nursing (or other Bachelor of Science degree accepted by National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN).  Candidates should already hold National Certification in School Nursing.  (NBCSN) or be qualified to sit immediately at the next open testing window. 

   

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  

  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures regarding School Nursing
  • Considerable knowledge of current trends, publications, research and laws pertaining to HIPPA and FERPA.
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate confidential records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information
  • Ability to implement appropriate programs for School Nursing
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs and activities
  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing
  • Ability to make oral presentations before large groups of people
  • Ability to use a computer and current word processing programs, create spreadsheets, and access online tools
  • Ability to navigate online tools such as Powerschool, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE  

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Nursing (or other Bachelor of Science degree accepted by National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN). 

 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS  

  • Registered Nurse with current Licensure with NC Board of Nursing (NCBON).
  • National Certification as a school nurse (within 3 years of hire date).
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Five (5) years of experience serving as a School Nurse in a public-school setting
  • Spanish Speaking

 

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES   

  1. Assure that school health policies and procedures adhere to federal, state, and current standards of the Nursing Practice Act, and are correctly implemented throughout the school system.  
  2. Attend Regional School Nurse Consultant Meetings
  3. Serve as a health consultant to the school administration.  
  4. Oversees the school nurses, making decisions and directing student care initiatives.
  5. Responsible for the completion of school nurse evaluations as outlined by NC DPI
  6. Provide direct nursing services for student at the Alamance Virtual School, and other sites as needed and identified by district leadership
  7. Communicate well with the team and efficiently delegate tasks.
  8. Overseeing day-to-day operations, supervising and providing training to team members.
  9. Handling escalating situations, hiring and evaluating nursing staff. 
  10. Formulate district guidelines for school nurses to insure effective and prudent practices are maintained 
  11. Consult with school nurses as needed on matters of nursing policy, procedures and protocols 
  12. Be available in person or by telecommunication to any school site in the event of an emergency requiring medical assistance and provide a compressive written plan of action during Lead Nurse’s absence.  
  13. Make regular and timely visits to all schools to assist, teach and guide health services to school nurses in routine care of students and staff and appropriate delegation of care
  14. Schedule and coordinate yearly state required health screenings such as, vision, hearing and dental screenings. 
  15. Serve as the liaison for district regarding student and community health concerns, including vaccinations and health screenings 
  16. Serve as liaison/coordinator for clinical placements of student nurses.  This also includes ensuring that clinical affiliate agreements are in place with local colleges and universities.
  17. Keep abreast of current information and mandates from the Department of Health, the CDC, and Alamance County
