Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the eighth grade; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination and successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.

Position Summary

This is responsible manual work in the inspection and disposal of refuse, and the monitoring of recycling, household hazardous waste and the reuse area at the County's Collection Centers.

An employee assigned to this classification ensures that refuse, recycling and household hazardous waste entering the collection centers as well as items left for the reuse area, are acceptable, sorted properly, and of an acceptable daily volume.

Work is performed without direct supervision but is under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.


Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with the County's core values.
Inspects loads and directs customers to sort items or materials into bins according to type, size, condition, color, marking, or other characteristics.

Assists with disposal of materials as requested.

Assists customers with disabilities as needed with disposal of materials.

Maintains hourly (vehicles entering center) and weekly (reuse area) logs.

Monitors household hazardous waste collection (waste oil, oil filters, paint, auto/marine/dry cell batteries, fluorescent tubes, etc) and recycling (newspaper, corrugated cardboard, magazines, green, brown, and clear glass, aluminum and steel cans, milk jugs, soda bottles, mixed paper, etc).

Makes minor repairs to scrap containers as needed.

Inspects vehicles entering the site to ensure that refuse is acceptable, and within volume limits.

Maintains office cleanliness and ensures collection area is clear of all debris and spillage.

Opens and closes collection centers following routine security procedures.

Operates garbage compaction equipment.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; talk or hear; use hands to handle, feel and reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb ladders.

The employee is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous materials and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
