JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Maintenance Technician (12 month – 240)
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Operations
JOB GOAL: To support safe, efficient, and disruption-free school operations by performing routine maintenance, basic repairs, and preventive maintenance on district facilities, grounds, and equipment, while assisting with inspections, work orders, and the overall upkeep of a functional learning environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two or more years of successful experience in maintenance or related trades.
- Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with district requirements
- Working knowledge of maintenance methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in general repairs, including basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and painting.
- Ability to perform routine tasks such as unclogging drains, replacing fixtures, changing filters, minor electrical repairs, and general facility upkeep.
- Knowledge of proper safety practices, including the use of chemicals, tools, equipment, PPE, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Understanding of applicable building codes (preferred) and school safety/emergency procedures.
- Ability to read and follow work orders, plans, diagrams, and instructions.
- Basic computer skills for work orders, time entry, and communication.
- Ability to operate and maintain tools and equipment safely and effectively, including custodial and maintenance equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, report, and address maintenance issues.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-service mindset.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and handle multiple assignments.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn new skills, procedures, and equipment operation (e.g., lifts, tractors).
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round, including in inclement weather, noisy, or crowded environments.
- Ability to work at heights, on ladders or scaffolding, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and exert up to 75 pounds of force.
- Sufficient physical stamina to perform demanding manual labor.
- Ability to maintain regular attendance, punctuality, and reliability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine maintenance, basic repairs, and preventive maintenance on school facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Complete assigned work orders accurately and in a timely manner using the district’s work order system.
- Conduct routine inspections of buildings, equipment, and systems to identify maintenance needs and potential safety hazards.
- Assist Maintenance Specialists with repairs and projects involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting.
- Perform basic plumbing repairs, including unclogging drains, replacing fixtures, repairing minor leaks, and completing simple onent rebuilds.
- Perform basic electrical tasks such as replacing light bulbs, switches, outlets, and resetting breakers.
- Conduct basic HVAC maintenance, including changing filters, cleaning vents, and maintaining drainage systems.
- Complete minor carpentry repairs to doors, furniture, fixtures, and shelving.
- Perform interior and exterior painting and touch-up work to maintain facility appearance and prevent deterioration.
- Repair and maintain custodial equipment, including vacuums and floor machines.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as lubricating hinges, tightening hardware, replacing belts/filters, and inspecting for wear or hazards.
- Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, ladders, and basic maintenance equipment.
- Maintain assigned tools, carts, and/or vehicles in clean and working condition.
- Monitor, stock, and organize maintenance supplies and storage areas to ensure efficiency.
- Utilize basic computer systems for work orders, communication, and time entry.
- Follow all district safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Use proper safety techniques, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain awareness of hazards, particularly in environments with students and staff.
- Ensure all work supports compliance with safety standards and minimizes disruptions to the learning environment.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, and team members regarding work progress and identified issues.
- Work collaboratively with maintenance staff, custodians, and contractors while also completing tasks independently.
- Demonstrate a customer-service mindset by responding promptly and professionally to staff needs.
- Prioritize and manage daily tasks to meet deadlines and operational needs.
- Assist with school events and respond to maintenance needs as required.
- Seek guidance when needed and demonstrate willingness to learn new skills and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records, including work orders and daily time entries.
- Support a clean, safe, and orderly environment across all assigned locations.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
