Job Title: ITINERANT EL INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal/EL Coordinator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Goal:

To assist with interpretation/translation, instruction, and educational support for students who are not proficient English speakers.

Qualifications:

  • An Associates Degree preferred.
  • Two years of higher education or successful passage of the Work Keys Test, required.
  • Experience working with EL students, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication with students, parents and others.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity and acuity to perform job responsibilities and essential functions in a fast-paced, intensive environment.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Assists teachers with instruction and facilitates learning opportunities for K-12 English language learners.
  • Provides instruction to students as prescribed by the EL Resource Teacher and reinforces skills introduced by the classroom teacher.
  • Assists teachers in checking and objectively evaluating students’ work; works with students individually and in small groups reinforcing skills based upon instructional guidelines; utilizes games, stories or other manipulative to enhance students’ learning skills.
  • Performs tasks consistent with the needs of the student as determined by the EL Coordinator and/or regular classroom teacher.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  • Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representatives groups as required.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the EL Coordinator and teacher.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School’s District Salary Schedule.

Terms of Employment: 182 days
