TITLE: Instructional Assistant
JOB GOALS: To assist the teacher in providing instruction to all students. To work with individual students as directed by the teacher.
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal, Classroom Teacher, Director of Educational Services
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must hold at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Good public relations skills
- Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students
- Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
- Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
- Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to lift/transfer students, ability to restrain students of various ages and sizes (if MCS trained), ability to feed students, and ability or provide physical support when required
- Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software to perform job responsibilities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Assists the teacher to implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of all students.
- Assists the teacher in identifying maintenance concerns.
- Supervises students as directed.
- Assists the teacher to provide appropriate safety procedures in accordance with state and local guidelines.
- Participates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans as needed.
- Demonstrates high-expectations for self and for students, and supports an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and achievable.
- Reports absences to teacher and principal, takes leave, and prepares for substitute in accordance to board policy and procedures.
- Assists the teacher in managing student behavior in the classroom and participates in the management of students in other areas of the school and school grounds.
- Assists the teacher in creating a learning environment that is attractive, safe, and conducive for learning.
- Supervises extra-curricular activities as assigned.
- Supervises morning, afternoon, detention, etc. as assigned.
- Works independently and follows directives.
- Participates in training in Managing Crisis Safely (MCS) as requested and approved.
- Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
- Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and materials owned by the school system.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
- Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal and the teacher.
SALARY: Based on the Jacksonville City School System Salary Schedule
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Days and hours based on board approval
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
