Position Title: Head Custodian / Maintenance Technician
Reports To: Director of Business and Facilities Operations/School Principal

Position Overview
Empower Schools of Alabama is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and service-driven Head Custodian to lead custodial and maintenance operations across our campus. This role is critical to ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained learning environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional success of all scholars.

Key Responsibilities
Facility Operations & Maintenance
Oversee and perform daily custodial operations to ensure a clean, safe, and orderly campus
Conduct routine inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns
Perform and coordinate repairs related to plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and general facility upkeep
Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules to extend the life of school facilities and equipment
Ensure all areas of the school, including classrooms, restrooms, offices, and common spaces, meet cleanliness standards
Staff Supervision & Leadership
Supervise, train, and evaluate custodial staff to ensure high performance and accountability
Assign daily tasks, manage schedules, and ensure completion of duties with quality and efficiency
Provide ongoing coaching and support to custodial team members
Foster a positive, collaborative work environment aligned with Empower’s mission and expectations
Safety & Compliance
Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards
Identify and address safety hazards promptly and report incidents to appropriate personnel
Maintain proper use and storage of cleaning supplies and equipment
Support emergency response efforts, including addressing urgent maintenance issues
Inventory & Resource Management
Manage inventory of custodial supplies and maintenance materials
Forecast needs, place orders, and maintain accurate records of supplies and equipment
Assist in budget planning and monitoring for custodial and maintenance operations
Collaboration & Customer Service
Collaborate with school leadership and staff to prioritize maintenance needs and support daily operations
Maintain strong relationships with vendors, contractors, and service providers
Provide excellent customer service when interacting with students, staff, families, and visitors
Support school-wide events, setup needs, and operational logistics
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, repairs, and inspections
Respond promptly to work orders and facility-related requests
Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic
Perform additional duties as assigned to support school operations
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Prior experience in custodial services, facilities maintenance, or a related field (required)
Previous supervisory or leadership experience (preferred)
Knowledge of building systems, cleaning methods, and maintenance procedures
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve maintenance issues effectively
Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Flexibility to respond to changing priorities and emergencies

Active presence throughout the school campus to monitor and maintain facility conditions
