JOB TITLE: Director of Student Services

RESPONSIBLE TO: Superintendent of Education

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Director of Student Services shall have the professional qualifications of a teacher in Alabama, and unless otherwise recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board, it shall be required that the Director of Student Services/Secondary Supervisor hold a master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution with a major in administration and supervision.

In addition, the following qualifications are required:
1. A minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience (K-12).
2. Full-time certified administrative experience as an elementary and/or secondary principal.
3. Demonstrated leadership, administrative and supervisory qualities.
4. Effective skills in human relations.
5. Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills.
6. Successful participation in professional development activities on the individual, local school and school system levels.
7. Exhibit education, civic and community involvement.
8. Must be knowledgeable concerning the general operation of a local education agency (i.e. curriculum, curriculum design, administration, supervision, staff development, school law,
etc.).

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. To serve as Director of Student Services for the school system.
2. Provides effective leadership and directs student services for comprehensive programs in area(s) of responsibility.
3. Supervises Health Services Coordinator.
4. Supervises 21st Century Supervisor.
5. Supervises all school based Mental Health Personnel.
6. Supervises all school based Social Workers.
7. Directs Discipline and Prevention and Support Services.
8. Supervises the District Truancy Program and serves as Attendance Officer.
9. Serves as a liaison between schools and local agencies such as social services, court services, and local law enforcement regarding student truancy.
10. Implements school system policy and procedures for attendance to include Chronic Absenteeism and the Early Warning process.
11. Conducts training with school-level attendance personnel on state and local attendance policies and procedures. Emphasizes effective interventions prior to the official Early Warning Process to reduce chronic absenteeism and truancy.
12. Directs and supervises attendance policies and supervises appropriate related activities.
13. Directs and supervises Guidance and Counseling Programs.
14. Directs and supervises 504 program identification and implementation.
15. Supervises the development of K-12 inservice/professional development activities within areas of program supervision (i.e. Drug Education, Discipline, Attendance, etc.).
16. Coordinates and supervises the “At Risk” program including identification, implementation and budget.
17. Supervises Drug Education and other related programs (K-12).
18. Coordinates the Elizabeth Steere Scholarship Program.
19. Assists with budget preparation, coordinates with other departments to assure maximum services, and maintains records/reports/inventories in accordance with policies.
20. Makes classroom visits and observations as directed by the Superintendent or requested by the local school principal(s).
21. Performs any other duties as directed by the Superintendent of Education.

JOB GOAL:

To supervise all 504, attendance, guidance programs, drug curriculum, and at-risk programs. To work with other supervisors, coordinators and directors, and the Superintendent of Education in carrying out the instructional goals of the schools and the school system.
