JOB DESCRIPTION: Assistant Principal

NATURE OF WORK

Under the direction of the principal, serves as an educational leader and assists the principal in the planning, coordination, and directing of activities and programs related to the administration of one or more schools.

ABILITY, EDUCATION TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Ability: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things. Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, articles, proposals, contracts, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, policies, etc. using prescribed formats.

Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of descriptive statistics, statistical inference, and statistical theory.

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

Education : Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in educational administration/leadership

Experience : Such as may have been gained through a Minimum of five (5) years in teaching experience; Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, school operations, and pupil services; administrative experience preferred; experience in a teacher leadership position which provided the opportunities to engage in the following: lead collaborative data analysis, action planning, lesson study, and peer observation; lead and/or support school improvement planning; and/or coordinate school engagement activities; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Valid AL Educational Leadership Certificate PK-12

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES

Under the direction of the building principal, the assistant principal will:

  • Create a sense of urgency and takes immediate action to ensure early successes.
  • Establish and monitor high standards for excellence with students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders.
  • Align school resources and prioritizes activities to achieve maximum results based on vision and goals.
  • Relentlessly focus school activities on student achievement.
  • Effectively plan and take action to achieve goals and objectives without direction.
  • Consistently identify potential issues and obstacles and proactively take action to create and implement solutions.
  • Formulate and execute on action plans despite ambiguity, obstacles or resistance.

  • Act consistently to influence others' thinking and behavior to achieve results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES : The assistant principal is responsible for supporting the principal with administering and supervising the total school program by establishing high expectations student achievement; building a positive school climate that supports the whole student; leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction; and building and developing a high-performing staff and leadership team to achieve the school's vision and goals. The assistant principal will support the principal in building collaborative partnerships with parents, community members, consultants, as well as, other internal/external resources and stakeholders to implement educational programs, capital improvements, systems reform, tools and other resources to accelerate student achievement.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED : The assistant principal works under the general supervision of superiors with latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgement; work is reviewed upon completion through conferences and reports for conformance to established policies, objectives, rules and regulations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, coordinates, organizes, supervises and evaluates the work of an instructional, professional, technical and clerical staff.

  • You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment
  • Bilingual Preferred
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check.
