Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Medical Interpreter provides accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation services—either in person or over the phone—for medical and dental staff serving limited English proficient patients and their families. The interpreter conveys both the content and intent of communication without adding, omitting, or altering information, and seeks clarification when necessary to ensure clear understanding.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate Spanish interpretation for patients, families, and healthcare providers in clinical and medical settings.
  • Interpret across a variety of medical specialties, utilizing appropriate medical terminology.
  • Provide interpretation support in dental settings, including knowledge of dental terminology.
  • Adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and ethical standards, including confidentiality requirements.
  • Assist with patient follow-up activities, such as appointment reminder calls, as needed.
  • Translate patient education materials upon request.
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional interactions with patients, visitors, providers, and staff.
  • Maintain professionalism in appearance, demeanor, and communication.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic healthcare environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of medical or clinical interpreting experience preferred.
  • National Interpreter Certification (NBCMI or CCHI) required within six (6) months of hire.
  • Documented fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical and dental terminology in both English and Spanish.
