What are the responsibilities and job description for the WLRH Intern position at Alabama Public Television?
WLRH 89.3 FM/HD is seeking a motivated, creative, and detail-oriented intern to assist with our marketing, membership, and promotional activities during the fall semester. This internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, audience development, and public media fundraising. The intern will work closely with the Promotions and Membership Specialist, Digital Content Manager, and other staff to support station campaigns, community events, and digital outreach.
Key Responsibilities:
Marketing & Membership Support
- Assist in maintaining the Promotions Calendar and prepping materials for key fundraising campaigns.
- Help create and post member thank-you messages (emails, cards, digital shout-outs).
- Assembling thank-you gifts and promotional materials.
- Brainstorm WLRH swag ideas and help research vendors or draft design mockups.
- Outbound marketing: distribute posters, flyers, and rack cards to local businesses, libraries, and event spaces
Event Planning & Community Engagement
- Provide event support for Open Houses, tabling events, and donor gatherings (e.g., prepping materials, signage, check-in, etc.).
- Capture event photos and video B-roll footage for use in WLRH promotions, social media posts and other uploads (YouTube).
- Help gather visuals of behind-the-scenes moments, community interactions, and station activities.
- Support logistics for community partnerships and public appearances (e.g., Madison Newcomers Fair, WLRH Costa Rica trip info. sessions).
WLRH YouTube Channel Support
- Prepare and upload long-form audio content and short promotional clips to WLRH’s YouTube channel.
- Create simple visuals (e.g., thumbnails, title cards) using Canva or similar tools.
- Write basic video descriptions, tags, and titles to align with WLRH branding.
- Organize captured footage for future content use.
Preferred Skills & Interests:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in public media, digital marketing, photography, or video production
- Comfortable taking photos and short video clips at events and public settings
- Familiarity with YouTube and Canva (or willingness to learn)
- Creative thinking

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL:
The ideal candidate will be a Communications, Broadcasting, Marketing, or related major at a nearby university.
LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:
The internship is based in Huntsville, AL. The duration of internships will be one academic grading period. For summer internships, the duration shall be no less than six weeks and shall not exceed three months. Interns should have some availability between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Hours are flexible, and we’ll work with you to accommodate class schedules. Interns can expect to work 8-20 hours per week.
