ABOUT THE ROLE:
AIDB Special Projects Department is AIDB's collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with federal partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders.
Special Projects consist of Gallaudet University Regional Center- South, Special Education Coordination, The NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB, The APH Center for Assistive Technology Training, The Gallaudet University Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project, development of the AIDB North facility, and the Joe Tom Armbrester Agricultural Education Program. Special Projects utilizes various technologies and networks to satisfy the collaborative needs of each department in order to achieve the overall mission.
These are the four projects:
- Regional Early Acquisition of Language (REAL)-South.
- NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB (NRSC).
- Center for Assistive Technology Training (CATT).
- Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC) – South.
Support for each project includes but is not limited to:
- REAL – Provide support in the coordination and delivery of service related to training and other activities designed to support language acquisition for deaf/hard of hearing children from identification through age 4, their families and the professionals who support them.
- NTID – Provide supervision and support during summer camps and other large events during the school year.
- CATT – Provide support for training activities and work collaboratively to design and implement training opportunities and technical assistance.
- GURC – Provide support for regional and national initiatives related to the Gallaudet University Regional Center training and community support.
Special Projects utilizes a wide range of technologies and networks to accomplish the collaborative needs of each department supporting the overall mission of AIDB and the federal partners.
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and clients served nationwide through federal partnerships at AIDB. As a leader in the AIDB Special Projects division, you will serve as a member of the Institute’s leadership team. You will report to the Executive Director of Special Projects. Your leadership style should always be aligned with our mission, purpose and core values. You must possess a genuine passion and concern for the success of the teachers and students served throughout our nation.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree in Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Special Education, Psychology, Vocational Rehabilitation, or Administration (i.e. MBA, MPA, M.Ed).
- OR -
- A Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Visual Impairments, Special Education, Early Childhood/Early Intervention, or Business/Public Administration plus five (5 ) years of senior level administrative experience within an education or state agency responsible for multiple statewide programs.
- Specialized training and/or experience in working with individuals who are Deaf, Blind or DeafBlind.
- Must possess a valid driver license and provide proof of insurance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in implementing and managing state and federal projects and programs.
- Experience managing programs serving individuals who are deaf and blind.
- Experience leading or collaborating with professionals on national platforms.
- Experience managing and coordinating budget amounts in excess of $4 Million
- Demonstrated successful experience in administration, educational leadership or program administration.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide support and direction for AIDB Special Projects.
- Assist Executive Director with performance evaluations and goal setting.
- Maintain knowledge on current federal and state laws, policies, and procedures related to IDEA, Part C and Part B.
- Must be able to develop rapport and a shared vision of the future with staff, school personnel, parents, students, clients, and other community partners.
- Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing and in public venues, locally, regionally and on a national level with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Must possess knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning educational administration and programming, particularly as they affect those with exceptionalities.
- Must be diligent about details and accuracy of work.
- Supervising staff and monitoring of all program budgets.
- Travel statewide at least 50% of the time, and out of state as needed.
- Support the Executive Director in Special Projects partnerships including, but not limited to, National Technical Institute for the Deaf, American Printing House, and Gallaudet University.
- Continue fulfilling AIDB’s vision of expanding partnerships nationwide.
- Provide visionary leadership in existing programs and strategic planning to enhance and expand Special Projects regionally and nationwide.
- Must be able to work flexible schedules including nights and weekends, to support all components of AIDB Special Projects.
- Assist with developing, implementing and providing oversight for local, regional and national projects, across Alabama, the southeastern US and across the country.
- Make recommendations to the Executive Director for policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal laws.
- Collect student/consumer and program data to be used in program evaluation and success, student outcomes, and the progress made toward the implementation of strategic planning goals and objectives.
- Assist the Executive Director and departmental administrators in the development and management of budgets for all federal and state programs in Special Projects.
- Assist the Executive Director in contract development and management.
- Must demonstrate excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess knowledge of best practices, contemporary issues and trends in curricula for students who have multiple needs and sensory impairments.
- A sign language proficiency level of according to the AIDB SCPI evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
