ABOUT THE ROLE:

AIDB Special Projects Department is AIDB's collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with federal partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders.

Special Projects consist of Gallaudet University Regional Center- South, Special Education Coordination, The NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB, The APH Center for Assistive Technology Training, The Gallaudet University Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project, and the Joe Tom Armbrester Agricultural Education Program.

Special Projects utilizes various technologies and networks to satisfy the collaborative needs of each department in order to achieve the overall mission.


ABOUT YOU:

You will play a vital role to ensure the promotion of AIDB Special Project’s mission to provide services to sensory impaired children throughout the region. You will also contribute to the development of AIDB Special Projects Department growth. Your office will be based in Decatur, Alabama. The region served is Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and there is potential to travel to other states as projects evolve. You will be a vital part of the transformative process of identifying and determining priorities relative to the outreach component of Special Projects, as well as, partner agencies; Gallaudet University, National Technical Institute for the Deaf and American Printing House. The individual in this position will take the lead on communicating to students and clients throughout the region services offered through AIDB Special Projects. The coordinator reports to the Executive Director of Special Projects. You will be required to travel in Alabama and to other states.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood, Special Education, Social Work, Counseling or Human Services field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years successful experience as a teacher or service provider working with students or clients who are Deaf or DeafBlind.
  • A sign language proficiency level of INTERMEDIATE according to the AIDB evaluation system is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver license and be eligible to be insured by AIDB insurance carriers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Deaf Education, Early Childhood, Special Education, or Rehabilitation Counseling
  • Supervisory experiences with local, state and national organizations/agencies.

Position Requirements:

  • Work with Special Project Directors to identify training needs and project event goals annually.
  • Provide event logistical support to Special Project Teams for all events throughout the year.
  • Maintain a registry database of attendees
  • Collect and maintain metrics of outreach and training provided across Special Projects.
  • Ability to network within the region and to new states to expand AIDB’s reach.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to include holidays, nights, and weekends.
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate good judgment and initiative.
  • Possess the ability to be creative and flexible.
  • Must be physically able to travel to identified and/or requested locations in Alabama and throughout the United States.
  • Knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning education and programming, particularly as they relate to individuals who are Deaf, Blind or DeafBlind.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in the education of individuals who are Deaf, Blind or DeafBlind, rehabilitation services, transition planning and/or career development planning.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain rapport with staff members, students, parents, alumni, public school personnel, Gallaudet University, AIDB, ADRS, employers, and others external to AIDB.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with the team of Gallaudet University Regional Center Directors, NTID/RIT, APH as well as, other integral stakeholders throughout the region and nation.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of methodologies used to educate individuals who are Deaf, Blind and DeafBlind.
  • Must exhibit exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills, including experience with public speaking and presentations
  • Professional experience managing projects, deadlines, and working with large service areas.
  • Professional experience with event planning, contracts, and budgets as it relates to conference/workshop preparation.
  • A sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED must be obtained within the first thirty (30) months of employment.
  • Upon offer of employment, the ABI/FBI record check must be completed based on the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 pursuant to Act 2002-457.


SALARY: $54,500 - $72,702 Scale D4 Rank 54 – Bachelors Degree

$56,210 - $77,213 Scale D4 Rank 56 Masters Degree

Direct deposit is required.

This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
