About the Facility:
Gallup Indian Medical Center is a 78-bed hospital located on the border of the Navajo Nation in Gallup, New Mexico. It is one of the busiest facilities in the Indian Health Service (IHS), with over 310,000 outpatient encounters and 4,400 inpatient admissions annually. GIMC has the largest staff among Navajo Area IHS facilities and supports a wide array of specialties including Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Surgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Emergency Medicine.
Position Summary:
Akicita Federal is seeking a licensed Pharmacist to provide comprehensive pharmacy services at GIMC in support of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS). The contractor will be responsible for screening, verifying, and dispensing medications, providing patient education, and collaborating with clinical teams to ensure safe and effective drug therapy.
Key Responsibilities:
-Screen outpatient prescription orders and inpatient charts for appropriateness and accuracy.
-Review prescribed medication orders for safety, efficacy, and appropriateness prior to administration or dispensing.
-Fill and verify prescriptions in accordance with federal, state, and IHS regulations and pharmacy best practices.
-Counsel patients on the correct use of medications, including potential side effects, storage requirements, and expected outcomes.
-Participate in functions supporting clinical pharmacy services such as:
-Drug information dissemination
-Pharmacy & Therapeutics support
-Supply management
-Quality assurance
-Pharmacokinetics services
-Management of patients on chronic medications and OTC therapies under protocol
-Utilize pharmacy computer systems for labeling and patient documentation.
-Prepare IV admixtures and assist with inpatient drug distribution as needed.
-Use childproof and water-resistant containers as required.
-Verify legal validity and completeness of prescription orders.
-Document all pharmacy interventions and patient interactions in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
-Ensure controlled substances are dispensed in accordance with proof-of-identity policies.
-Utilize two patient identifiers prior to any consultation.
Patient Counseling Must Include:
-Medication name and purpose
-Dosage schedule and special instructions (e.g., with food, empty stomach)
-Therapy duration and expected outcome
-Common side effects and precautions
-Proper storage guidelines
-Discussion of disease state and relevance of therapy
Qualifications:
-Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (BSPharm) from an accredited institution
-Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in any U.S. state or territory
-Minimum of 1 year of recent pharmacy experience (IHS or hospital experience preferred)
-Proficient with pharmacy systems and EHR platforms
-Strong knowledge of pharmacology, drug interactions, and clinical decision-making
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Must pass federal background check and credentialing process
Preferred Qualifications:
-Prior experience working with tribal or underserved populations
-Experience in inpatient and outpatient pharmacy environments
-Familiarity with Indian Health Service policies and practices
