The Environmental Engineer Assistant is responsible for ensuring compliance with all required environmental laws and regulations as they pertain to Ajax Paving Industries manufacturing facilities. This include both permanent and temporary manufacturing facilities of Hot Mix Asphalt and Concrete Mix. The Environmental Engineer Assistant accomplishes this by coordinating, administering and implementing comprehensive inspections, training and recordkeeping as well as writing plans to carry out standards.

- Assist with obtaining required air, stormwater, waste disposal, and soil erosion permits for plant sites
- Assist in maintaining submittals to the state agencies via the MiEnviro Portal
- Perform plant and construction site inspections to evaluate ongoing environmental compliance
- Complete risk analysis of projects and project sites before work commences, identifying environmental-related risks and protective measures needed
- Storm water pollution prevention inspections, recordkeeping and corrective action if deemed necessary
- Air quality pollution prevention inspections, visible emission readings, recordkeeping and corrective action if deemed necessary
- Liaison with external parties such as local and federal government agencies
- Work with project management teams and field staff to implement and create solutions to environmental-related issues on project sites
- Work with management to create plans for emergency procedures, stormwater protection and air pollution control at plants and job sites
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory agencies, including the Michigan Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE)
- Work closely with Environmental and plant personnel regarding audits and procedures necessary at all job & plant sites and the terminal location.
- Assist in training employees on environmental regulatory compliance, permits, procedures and recordkeeping.
- Represent construction company in meetings with government bodies and other organizations on issues regarding workplace environmental issues
- Assist in research projects, energy analysis, environmental controls studies as needed
- Field work including sampling, testing, monitoring and recordkeeping to comply with air and water quality standards
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Knowledgeable of Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State of Michigan Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) regulations and standards
- Be able to communicate with all positions of the workforce
- Possess strong leadership, organizational and recordkeeping skills
- Exhibit honesty, trustworthiness and a positive attitude
- Be a team player, self-motivated and able to work independently
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient use of computer software, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Be able to work in the field and office environments
- CAD experience and ability to read construction documents and prints a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental or civil engineering or similar field
- 3-5 years of environmental field experience, or in a related field
- Environmental experience in the automotive, industrial or construction industry preferred
- Certifications related to environmental protection are encouraged
