Position Summary
AJ Glass is looking for a highly experienced and solution-driven Senior Estimator to serve as the senior technical reviewer and highest-level estimating resource within the department. The Senior Estimator primarily reviews estimates, budgets, proposals, alternates, and CORs prepared by others while personally producing work when volume, deadlines, or project complexity require additional capacity. Working closely with the Preconstruction Manager, the Senior Estimator provides department-wide technical leadership, coaches Lead Estimators and developing estimators, supports risk-based review and bid decisions, and helps maintain consistent estimating standards. The Preconstruction Manager retains formal supervision, workload ownership, and performance management. Final release authority is earned after demonstrated familiarity with AJ Glass standards, systems, customers, and risk expectations.
What You'll Do
- Perform final technical and commercial review of estimates, budgets, proposals, alternates, and CORs prepared by the estimating team, ensuring pricing accuracy, scope clarity, supporting documentation, and adherence to company standards.
- Exercise risk-based review judgment, determining when a full review is required and when targeted review is sufficient based on project size, complexity, customer importance, award probability, margin exposure, estimator capability, and available time.
- Coach Lead Estimators on first-level review, mentoring, and escalation judgment so Estimator I and Estimator II team members receive consistent day-to-day guidance without unnecessary duplication of review work.
- Provide advanced technical coaching and developmental feedback to estimators at all levels, focusing on reasoning, error prevention, commercial judgment, and independent problem solving.
- Primarily review work prepared by others while personally producing estimates, budgets, proposals, and CORs when volume, deadlines, strategic importance, or project complexity require additional capacity.
- Lead or provide senior input on complex negotiations, scope disputes, pricing strategy, and high-risk customer discussions by presenting complete, well-supported technical and commercial positions.
- Resolve complex bid issues, scope discrepancies, and estimating errors in collaboration with general contractors, estimators, project managers, and other internal teams.
- Partner with the Preconstruction Manager to maintain and adjust the bid calendar based on customer commitments, shifting priorities, resource availability, project urgency, estimator capability, and responsible review capacity.
- Provide strategic input on estimating decisions, including opportunity selection, risk posture, pricing consistency, resource constraints, and when work should be escalated or declined.
- Analyze historical pricing and available cost information to help keep proposals accurate, competitive, and aligned with established cost trends and margin expectations.
- Take ownership of urgent estimating needs, including quick-turn budgets, high-risk revisions, and time-sensitive work that requires senior technical judgment.
- Verify that takeoffs, assemblies, vendor quotations, labor assumptions, proposal scope, exclusions, and supporting documentation can be independently understood without relying on undocumented knowledge.
- Model disciplined review, professional communication, and strong personal ownership while strengthening the department without creating conflicting direction with the Preconstruction Manager.
What We're Looking For
- 5 years of experience in commercial construction estimating, preferably with a focus on glazing systems.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management is a plus, but hands-on experience is also highly valued.
- Strong command of curtainwall, storefront, thermal systems, specialty glass, hardware packages, and related materials.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing estimates prepared by others and identifying material technical or commercial risk without routinely recreating the entire estimate.
- Demonstrated experience coaching, developing, and providing clear technical feedback to experienced and developing estimators; prior formal supervisory experience is helpful but not required.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities, frequent interruptions, and rapidly shifting deadlines while delivering high-quality results under pressure.
- Skilled in bid negotiation, general contractor communication, conflict resolution, and high-risk scope clarification.
- Strong personal ownership of reviewed work and sound judgment about when additional review, clarification, qualification, escalation, or management involvement is required.
- Ability to lead through expertise, example, coaching, and influence while working under the Preconstruction Manager's functional and supervisory leadership.
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to help maintain a fluid bid calendar and protect responsible review capacity.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Bluebeam; familiarity with platforms such as Procore; and comfort learning cloud-based takeoff, estimating, scheduling, and collaboration systems.
Physical Requirements
- Majority of the position is performed in an office setting, sitting or standing at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to attend occasional site visits and scheduled site walks on active construction sites, which may involve walking or standing, limited ladder use, and normal working conditions.
- Occasional lifting of light materials (up to 25 pounds), such as plans or samples.
