Summary:
This position supports the Controller in directing, coordinating, maintaining, and controlling the accounting system for the Portland, Maine office of this publicly traded mechanical contractor. The Assistant Controller will help ensure that accounting procedures and reporting processes conform to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and will assist with financial planning, analysis, and operational efficiency initiatives. This office has approximately 70 employees with annual revenues in the $20–$25 million range.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support the Controller in overseeing daily operations of the accounting department and identifying opportunities for process improvement.
- Assist with the preparation, maintenance, and reporting of financial records and analyses.
- Collaborate with operations teams to help prepare and analyze percentage of completion reports for projects.
- Maintain effective business relations with customers, vendors, auditors, and regulators as directed by the Controller.
- Assist with payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, and cash flow management.
- Facilitate communication and coordination between the Portland location and the CSUSA corporate accounting team.
- Help develop benchmarks for measuring the company’s financial and operating performance.
- Support financial analysis for contract negotiations and capital investment decisions.
- Assist with state sales and payroll tax filings, ensuring timely and accurate payments.
- Work with division managers to help develop and execute business plans and annual budgets.
- Contribute to establishing and executing departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
- Support the coordination of financial audits and help implement procedural improvements.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned by the Controller.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Five plus years of experience in an accounting role (mid-level experience preferred).
- Experience with publicly traded companies is a plus but not required.
- Experience with general ledger accounting, including adjusting entries.
- Familiarity with construction contracting, Prevailing Wage rules, Job Cost, and Percentage of Completion Accounting is a plus.
- Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles, including GAAP.
- Experience with automated financial reporting systems.
- Ability to analyze financial data and prepare reports, statements, and projections.
- Working knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis.

This position reports to the Controller.
