DR-02: $75,484 - $118,528 Job Overview The Occupational & Environmental Health Department of the 711th Human Performance Wing within the Air Force Research Laboratory (711HPW/OETC) is looking for a Health Physicist at the DR-02/GS 12-13 level. This position is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. OPEN TO CURRENT AFMC CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES ONLY. This announcement will remain open until 30 Sep 2026 to fill the current vacancy. Position duties include, but are not limited to: Serves as the organization's Radiation Safety Officer with principal responsibilities of Radiation Safety Program management; to include the safe/compliant use of radiation producing devices and radioactive material (RAM) associated with the execution of the USAFSAM missions. Develops/implements procedures for control of RAM and radiation producing devices to include receipt, use, storage, disposal, emergency response, and security. Investigates/develops corrective actions for incidents that result in overexposures, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipt, uses, transfers, disposals, or other deviations from accepted procedures, regulations, or federal statutes. Ensures annual radiation safety training is conducted at the appropriate frequency/level. Performs/documents radiation area surveys. Provides expert evaluation/guidance regarding accepted health physics practices and regulatory requirements for use, transport, storage, and disposal of RAM. Provides expert consultation to senior health physicists and government officials on all matters of radiation physics, biological effects of radiation, radiation safety, and radioactive material use. Provides oral/written response to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation inquiries received from sources such as: Congress, DOD, USAF/CC, Freedom of Information Act, Veterans Groups, Veterans Administration, and individuals. Assist in the radioanalytical laboratory with routine count room and radiochemistry procedures. No Required Qualifications Education: Natural science or engineering degree that includes at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. Desired Qualifications Able to work independently without extensive supervision. Experience utilizing the application of health physics and/or related disciplines, to include physics, chemistry, biology and engineering in developing assessment and risk mitigation strategies related to human health related to operations utilizing radiation, PRIMARILY non-ionizing radiation (EMF, laser, directed energy). Familiarity with policy, regulations and guidance related to radiation health and management. Possesses knowledge and competence in the application of engineering principles and applying the principles to research and improvements in the protection of the human and the environment from Department of Defense activities. Able to answer and respond to technical queries with timely and accurate information through established consulting service chains. Has experience ensuring that program management/project teams are functioning to meet customer requirements. History of ability to represent an organization and/or service component in professional forums, working groups and committees. Familiarity with Program Management Institute (PMI) methods and procedures. Ensures all assigned programs conform with ISO standards 19011 (Audits), 9001 (Quality), 30401 (Knowledge Management), 14001 (Environment), 45001 (Occupational Health), and ANSI Z10 (Occupational Health). Experience developing recommendations for radiation safety policy and solving wide-ranging, highly-technical and often novel problems associated with human exposure to radiation. Knowledge and competence in the application of health physics principles and applying the principles to research and improvements in the protection of the human and the environment from unwarranted exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Conduct studies and investigations of new techniques in the physics field associated with non-ionizing radiation. Familiarity with computer applications in dosimetry, shielding, spectroscopy, laser hazard distance calculations and EMF power calculations. Knowledge of modeling radiation exposure and data processing of scientific data/information. Develop comprehensive recommendations to minimize adverse consequences resulting from exposure to radioactive materials. Knowledge of health physics and radiation protection theory and practice, the measurement and analysis of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and radioactivity, radiation protection standards and regulatory guidance, emergency procedures, and decontamination/decommissioning procedures.
