The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is seeking a full-time General Engineer (009451381M) to work in the TS/SAR/SCI branch of the Secure Storage Division (NDW) of the Air Delivered Capabilities Directorate, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. This position is a NH-0801-03 which has a typical 2025 salary range of $89,583 - $138,486 (Includes locality pay for Albuquerque, NM) DUTIES: The position serves as an Integration Engineer within the Secure Storage Division, responsible for the USAF’s roles for Joint Nuclear Weapon Lifecycle activities for the multiple components of the United States’ nuclear triad. The selected candidate will lead activities developing and testing nuclear weapon and tactical/strategic delivery maintenance and storage, focused on achieving effective and reliable weapon performance. Special access engineers work with National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Aircraft and Cruise Missile platform System Program Offices (SPOs) to refine interface requirements and documentation. They also validate platform interface designs, and document integration successes across a spectrum of assessment, evaluation and test activities to include emerging simulation and digital engineering methodologies. Program engineers provide technical oversight on sustaining engineering and surveillance efforts including technical reviews, test strategy, test plans, test reports, engineering and technical assistance requests and technical evaluations. Duties culminate in the ability to advise sponsor organizations on system performance, and indicate if the system meets technical specifications satisfactorily to be accepted by the government. The work environment is in Special Access Facilities (SAP-Fs) and Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs). The position is not telework eligible because of the persistent need to be on high-level networks and communication systems. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Electrical engineering background with radio frequency (RF) expertise highly desired
  • Background in developmental and operational testing, to include design of experiments, test strategy, test plans, and reports
  • Desirable for applicant to have experience with Department of War (DoW) and Department of Energy (DOE) acquisition policy and planning
  • Ability to interpret acquisition guidance, to tailor requirements to meaningful activities, and to develop templates for the team
  • Knowledge of a wide range of multidisciplinary professional engineering theories, concepts, principles, standards, methods, techniques, materials, and equipment
  • Knowledge and experience in general engineering fields with demonstrated competence in the areas of structures, electronics and/or mechanical systems
  • Experience with development and sustainment engineering methodologies
  • Knowledge of continuous process improvement strategies and applications
  • Knowledge of logistics and program management
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of weapon system stakeholders to include: Nuclear Enterprise personnel from the Departments of Energy and Defense; Air Force Air Staff, MAJCOM Staff, AFNWC Staff/Wings/Divisions; field level users and their respective support agencies
  • Ability to orally present and express ideas, information and concepts clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience
  • Experience in preparing quality reports to include supported recommendations, meaningful program information, written summaries and results from synthesized data and/or metric analysis
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships among team members; demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
  • Expertise in tracking program status, delays and opportunities. Ability to establish project/program goals, objectives, and completion strategies
  • Desirable for applicant to have experience with weapon system programs and ability to interpret nuclear weapon and related nuclear enterprise policies
  • Desirable for applicant to have expertise in National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and DoW cybersecurity requirements
  • Monitors, and analyzes applicable statistical data and/or reports to track program status, evaluates results and applies them to strategic goals, and plan improvements. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.
  • Technical Master’s Degree Desired
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise; employee must obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance
  • This position has been designated an acquisition position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
  • Occasional travel is required. Travel may account for up to 20% of the time, but can also be negotiated within the branch.
