Position Summary

The AI Policy Institute (AIPI) seeks a strategic Director of Communications to lead our media relations, public engagement, and messaging efforts on AI governance and catastrophic risk policy. You will translate complex AI policy research and polling data into compelling narratives that shape public discourse and inform policy debates. This role requires exceptional communication skills, deep media relationships, and the ability to navigate rapidly evolving AI policy conversations. The Director of Communications will elevate AIPI's profile as the leading voice channeling public concern about AI into effective governance solutions.


Compensation: $110,000 – $160,000


Responsibilities


Media Relations & Press Strategy

  • Develop and execute comprehensive media strategies to amplify AIPI's research, polling, and policy recommendations.
  • Cultivate relationships with national reporters, editorial boards, and broadcast media covering AI, technology policy, and national security.
  • Manage rapid response communications on breaking AI developments and policy announcements.
  • Prepare and pitch op-eds, secure media placements, and coordinate exclusive polling releases.


Content Development & Messaging

  • Translate technical AI research and complex polling data into accessible, compelling content that is naturally viral.
  • Oversee production of press releases, blog posts, newsletters, and multimedia content.
  • Ensure all communications effectively integrate AIPI's unique public opinion data to demonstrate voter concern.


Digital Strategy & Public Engagement

  • Manage AIPI's digital presence across website, social media, and emerging platforms.
  • Develop innovative campaigns to engage the public on AI governance issues.
  • Create data visualizations and infographics to make polling results and policy proposals accessible.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage and public sentiment on AI policy issues.


Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner with Executive Director to shape AIPI's overall communications strategy and public positioning.
  • Work closely with policy team to ensure accurate representation of research findings and recommendations.
  • Coordinate with polling team to maximize impact of survey releases and findings.
  • Support fundraising efforts through compelling donor communications and materials.
  • Manage communications staff and consultants; mentor junior team members.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of communications experience in policy, advocacy, or journalism settings.
  • Proven track record of securing high-profile media placements and managing press relationships.
  • Experience translating complex technical or policy issues for mainstream audiences.
  • Strong understanding of AI technology and policy debates and ability to quickly master new technical concepts.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills across formats (press releases, op-eds, digital content).
  • Experience with data visualization and making research findings accessible to broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced environments and manage multiple priorities.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on technology policy, national security, or catastrophic risk communications.
  • Established relationships with technology, policy, or national security reporters at major outlets.
  • Background in public opinion research or experience communicating polling data.
  • Digital marketing or campaign experience, particularly in advocacy or policy contexts.
  • Experience working in or with nonprofit think tanks or research organizations.
  • Multimedia production skills (video, podcasts, interactive content).


Salary : $110,000 - $160,000
