Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Teacher

Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher (Grades 7–12)

Position Summary

AHSTW Community School District's Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) Teacher provides instruction in life skills, career readiness, and family and consumer-related content areas. Courses may include nutrition and wellness, culinary arts, child development, personal finance, housing/interior design, textiles, and career exploration. The teacher supports students in developing practical skills for independent living, employment, and responsible citizenship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in Family & Consumer Sciences courses
• Develop curriculum aligned with Iowa Department of Education standards and Career & Technical Education (CTE) frameworks
• Incorporate hands-on, project-based learning experiences
• Teach topics such as:
  • Nutrition and food preparation
  • Child development and parenting
  • Personal and family finance
  • Consumer decision-making
  • Career readiness and employability skills
• Maintain a safe and organized classroom/lab environment (kitchen, sewing lab, etc.)
• Assess student learning and provide timely feedback
• Integrate technology and real-world applications into instruction
• Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administration
• Participate in school improvement initiatives and professional development
• Supervise students in classroom and lab settings
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Family & Consumer Sciences, Education, or related field
• Valid Iowa teaching license with appropriate endorsement (FCS or CTE-related field)
• Knowledge of Iowa Core standards and CTE competencies
• Strong classroom management and instructional skills
• Ability to teach a variety of FCS subject areas

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching middle or high school students
• Experience with Career & Technical Education (CTE) programming
• Ability to sponsor or support student organizations such as FCCLA
• Desired:  ServSafe certification or willingness to obtain
• Willingness to assist with work-based learning or community partnerships

Work Environment

• New Classroom and laboratory facility(kitchen labs, sewing/textile labs)
• Requires supervision of students using equipment and tools
• May involve extended hours for events, student organizations, or competitions

Terms of Employment

• Contract length: [189 days]
• Salary and benefits per district master contract [Minimum $50,000.00]
