Overview

JOB SUMMARY:   Under the direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, supervises and assist in monitoring the efficiency of general clinical laboratory and pathology operations, including operational planning (overseas the day to day operation), orientation/in-service-training-motivation-performance evaluation and management of staff, organizing and delineating all duties and responsibilities of all clinical testing including POC, quality management, workflow and processes, problem solving, equipment maintenance, inter-hospital relationships with the laboratory, TAT evaluation, proficiency testing review, and various other projects that are assigned. This position serves patients in and out of the hospital of all ages.

 

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

 

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college of university, a master’s degree is a plus but not required.
  • A valid and current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.  ASCP certification is preferred, but not required.
  • At least 6 years of experience as a lead/supervisor CLS preferred.
  • Must be able to converse well in English because of physician, nurse, and patient contact.
  • Have good manual dexterity.
  • Work well in times of stress.
  • Have excellent organizational skills.
  • Have excellent people skills.
  • Have computer / LIS skills.
  • Responsibilities

    Preparing and maintaining the department schedule within workload needs and budget guidelines.

    National Patient Safety Goal #1: Accurate Patient ID. Always verifies the name and MR number of the patient before collecting the specimen or performing the test.

    Participates in the updating of the policies and procedure manuals and participates in staff meetings to in-service and update staff on changes that have occurred.

    Participates in the design, implementation, and monitoring of the laboratory Improvement of Performance program.

    Always performs special projects and assignments in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner.

    When personnel concerns arise, always present a plan of action and exhibit the ability to counsel using effective interaction and assures that all action is done in a lawful and proper manner.

    Always participates in maintaining and the keeping of accurate payroll records.

    Participates in the establishment of departmental goals.

    When a staffing vacancy needs to filled, always recommends how the vacancy shall be filled and recommends persons to be interviewed to fill the vacancy.

    Is able to perform all laboratory procedures that are required of other personnel.

    Assists in the development of ways to use Point of Care testing, as needed, in the Medical Center.

    Monitor responsible QC, trends, and action taken. 

    Always follow laboratory policies when performing any tests in the laboratory.

    Always verifies critical values, verification of test results before reporting.

    Always uses ethical judgment and technical skill within the policies and legal guidelines of the department and the Garfield Medical Center.

    Always assures there are adequate supplies and maintaining inventory control

    Always communicates concerns and problems accurately to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.

    Seeks guidance and direction, as necessary, for performance of duties.

    In the absence of the Director of Laboratory Services, always operates the laboratory within budgetary guidelines and staffing needs.

    Always adjusts and revises schedule as necessary in view of STATS, ER, OP, Timed Specimens, and scheduled and unscheduled PTO time of other personnel.

    Always calls the results of critical results and documents, in the LIS, who was called, time called, and who called. National Patient Safety Goal #2 – 

    Effective communication among caregivers

    When there is a need to improve service in the laboratory, always suggests ways to improve.

    Always serves as a positive influence in moving the staff towards the accomplishment of laboratory goals.

    Always assures that the department functions in compliance with the standards and regulations of the JCAHO, CLIA, and the State Department of Health Services.

    Always utilizes knowledge of QC for each test and uses that knowledge to correct problems and release test results.

    Always assures that Point of Care testing functions within the guidelines of JCAHO and State of California Department of Health Services.

    Always refers abnormal results to pathologists according to laboratory policy.

    Demonstrates a willingness to assist co-workers in the completion of daily tasks or special projects.

    Always answers the telephone according to the Medical Center's policy.  Answers in a clear, concise, and in a courteous manner with respect for confidentiality.

    Always transfers telephone calls to proper personnel and relays a proper message which includes, when necessary, the name and company of the person calling.

    National Patient Safety Goal # 13 Encourage patient’s involvement in their care as a patient safety strategy Always greets patients in a courteous manner and responds to patients with concern and positive interpersonal skills.

    Always resolve guests’ concerns promptly and satisfactorily. 

    Respects, at all times, the confidentiality of patient records and uses complete discretion when discussing patient matters.

    In a positive manner, always assists those involved in Point of Care testing to understand the laboratory standards and why they must maintain those standards.

    Assure that staff is aware of all safety and preventative issues.

    Assure staff annually reviews and signs all appropriate policy and procedure manuals

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Salary : $49 - $56
