The Payroll Team Lead ensures that salaried and hourly employees are paid timely and accurately according to company policies and union contracts as required for each of the Ahlstrom locations. The Payroll Team Lead will act as an escalation point for complex payroll issues, employee inquiries, and discrepancy resolutions for the company’s payroll operations.
The Payroll Team Lead collaborates with departments on issues and projects and trains payroll staff on various technical and functional payroll processes. The Payroll Team Lead is a main point of contact during department absences to manage payroll workload, respond to management, and to be the primary backup to the Payroll Manager as needed.

Main responsibilities:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the payroll processing function, including reviewing and verifying payroll data and ensuring accuracy of employee payroll information.
- Process full life cycle payroll, prepare payroll adjustments, enter wage garnishments and ensure compliance with court ordered payroll adjustments, and review reporting.
- Manages payroll processing and month-end task deadlines.
- Develop and implement payroll procedures, processes, and controls to improve efficiency and accuracy of payroll operations.
- Train payroll team members, ensuring they are knowledgeable about payroll processes and procedures.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as HR and Finance, to ensure accuracy and timeliness of payroll processing.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable payroll laws, regulations, and internal policies.
- Provide excellent customer service to employees and respond to payroll inquiries and issues in a timely and professional manner
- Prepare weekly and monthly reporting for internal and external partners, as necessary.
- Prepare and provide reports, charts and graphs to management with information to make decisions.
- Work closely with the Payroll Manager and collaborates with other departments on projects.
- Assists team members with resolving payroll errors and issues.
- Manage application changes through testing in the user acceptance testing system for payroll.
- Able to make configuration changes to the time and attendance system.
- Analyzes payroll data and investigates issues independently and reports to Payroll Manager.
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or HR related preferred
- 3-5 years payroll processing experience
- 3-5 years ADP Vantage or ADP Workforce Now experience
- FCP or CPP is preferred
- Must be proficient in Excel
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong understanding of payroll tax and labor laws
- Organization, accuracy, and attention to detail are a must
- Ability to resolve complex, sensitive, or urgent issues
