Interim Controller (4–6 Month Contract)
Location: Hybrid – Winter Park, FL
Duration: 4–6 Month Contract Assignment
Compensation: Competitive hourly or project-based rate, commensurate with experience
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Interim Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations during a 4–6 month engagement. This individual will oversee the accounting function, supervise a Senior Accountant and Accounts Payable activities, manage equity compensation accounting, improve accounting systems and processes, and ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
The ideal candidate has significant controllership experience, strong GAAP knowledge, expertise with stock option accounting, and the ability to quickly evaluate and improve existing accounting operations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Oversee and maintain accurate financial books and records in accordance with GAAP.
- Utilize QuickBooks to manage accounting operations, maintain the general ledger, and support financial reporting.
- Review and organize current-year accounting activity and prepare complete, accurate, and timely financial statements.
- Pull together current-year financial reporting, reconciliations, and supporting schedules to provide management with meaningful financial information.
- Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare and review balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and other management reports.
- Ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other professional service providers.
Team Leadership
- Provide oversight, direction, and support to the Senior Accountant.
- Review accounting work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Partner with leadership to resolve accounting, reporting, and operational issues.
- Assist in establishing best practices and improving workflow within the accounting department.
Accounts Payable Oversight
- Oversee the Accounts Payable function to ensure invoices, vendor payments, and employee reimbursements are processed accurately and on time.
- Review approval processes and strengthen internal controls surrounding disbursements.
- Monitor cash flow and assist with payment planning.
- Improve AP procedures and reporting capabilities.
Equity Compensation & Investments
- Maintain and reconcile equity compensation schedules, including stock options, grants, exercises, vesting events, and cancellations.
- Utilize and maintain the company's equity management platform.
- Coordinate with external valuation specialists regarding 409A valuations.
- Record and reconcile stock-based compensation expense in accordance with ASC 718 and applicable GAAP guidance.
- Support leadership and external advisors with equity-related reporting and accounting requirements.
Process Improvement & Systems
- Evaluate existing accounting systems, processes, and financial controls.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting accuracy, and scalability.
- Lead or support improvements to QuickBooks and related accounting workflows.
- Develop recommendations for strengthening accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Assist with implementation of system enhancements and upgraded accounting processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA preferred.
- 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager.
- Advanced QuickBooks experience.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience supervising accounting personnel.
- Experience overseeing Accounts Payable and monthly close processes.
- Hands-on experience with stock option and equity compensation accounting.
- Experience supporting 409A valuations.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to independently improve accounting processes and financial reporting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in venture-backed, growth-stage, or private-company environments.
- Familiarity with equity management platforms such as Carta, Shareworks, or similar systems.
- Experience improving accounting systems, workflows, and internal controls.
- Experience cleaning up books and preparing companies for audit, financing, or growth initiatives.
Engagement Details
- 4–6 month contract assignment.
- Hybrid work arrangement in Winter Park, Florida.
- Approximately 25–40 hours per week.
- Potential for extension based on business needs
Pay: $75.00 - $100.00 per hour
