TITLE: High School Assistant Football Coach

REPORTS TO: Activities Director & Head Football Coach

BASIC FUNCTION: The function of a coach is to educate students through participation in interscholastic competition. An interscholastic program should be designed to enhance academic achievement and should never interfere with opportunities for academic success. Each student should be treated with the utmost respect, and his or her welfare should be considered in decisions by the coach at all times. 

 

SKILLS AND JOB FUNCTIONS (For all AGWSR Community Schools Positions)

HIRING SPECIFICATIONS (in no particular order of importance):

Demonstrated Experience or Willingness to Acquire Skills:

  1. Monitor athletic performance daily. Use multiple data points to guide and individualize coaching 
  2. To strive always for playing excellence that will produce successful teams or individuals within the bounds of good sportsmanship and mental health of the student
  3. To ensure growth and development that will raise the number of individual participants; that will give impetus to increasing attendance at each contest and that will enable a program of continuing upkeep and improvement of facilities. This includes keeping an updated inventory of equipment used, needed, and/or desired.
  4. To provide opportunity for a student to experience success in an activity he or she selects.
  5. To develop an understanding of the value of activities in a balanced educational process
  6. Participate in relevant professional development
  7. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible
  8. Adapt coaching methods and coaching materials to meet athletes' varying needs
  9. Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems
  10. Confer with students and parents about the inherent risk of injury and teach proper techniques related to your activity to eliminate or reduce the risk of injury
  11. Leading through communication to others to convey information effectively
  12. Using logic, reasoning, and critical thinking to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  13. The coach shall be aware that he or she has a tremendous influence, for either good or ill, on the education of the student and, thus, shall never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character (from NFHS)
  14. The coach shall uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact with students, officials, athletic directors, school administrators, the state high school athletic association, the media, and the public, the coach shall strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct (from NFHS)
  15. Represent AGWSR Community Schools effectively in the community, state and nation

NFHS Code of Ethics:

All coaches shall adhere to the National Federation of State High School Associations Code of Ethics.

  1. The coach shall take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse.
  2. The coach shall avoid the use of alcohol and tobacco products when in contact with players.
  3. The coach shall promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct his or her program in harmony with the total school program.
  4. The coach shall master the contest rules and shall teach them to his or her team members. The coach shall not seek an advantage by circumvention of the spirit or letter of the rules.
  5. The coach shall exert his or her influence to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and by working closely with cheerleaders, pep club sponsors, booster clubs, and administrators.
  6. The coach shall respect and support contest officials. The coach shall not indulge in conduct which would incite players or spectators against the officials. Public criticism of officials or players is unethical.
  7. The coach should meet and exchange cordial greetings with the opposing coach to set the correct tone for the event before and after the contest.
  8. The coach shall not exert pressure on faculty members to give students special consideration.
  9. The coach shall not scout opponents by any means other than those adopted by the league and/or state high school athletic association.

 

ABILITIES: 

This position will require physical demands that include constant standing, walking, reaching, pushing/pulling, lifting under 70 pounds, and carrying items at least 35 feet. There will be frequent climbing of stairs and manual dexterity tasks. There will be occasional sitting and vehicle driving. The working conditions will be constantly inside/outside with extremes of temperature and humidity.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION:

Required:

  1. Valid Iowa Coaching License 
  2. Knowledge of activity, player development, program development and effective coaching methods

 

Desired:

  1. Previous 7-12 coaching experience in an extra-curricular setting
  2. Experience working in a culturally diverse setting
  3. Advanced certifications as appropriate to the position
