Agiri Learning Consultants® is seeking an exceptional Science Instructional Coach to support high school science teachers and instructional leaders across NYC-area public schools during the 2026–27 school year.
We seek a coach with deep science content knowledge and strong adult-learning expertise who can strengthen rigorous, inquiry-driven, Regents-aligned instruction while helping teachers address students’ prerequisite knowledge and conceptual gaps.
The ideal candidate understands how students develop scientific explanations, analyze evidence, construct and use models, and engage in scientific reasoning. Through coaching, modeling, observation, feedback, curriculum support, and professional learning, they help teachers make complex scientific ideas accessible while maintaining intellectual rigor.
What You’ll Do:
- Coach grades 9–12 science teachers and instructional leaders, particularly in Biology and Earth & Space Science. Chemistry and/or Physics expertise is a plus.
- Support NYSSLS/NGSS-aligned, phenomena-based instruction that integrates disciplinary core ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and Crosscutting Concepts.
- Help teachers identify and address prerequisite knowledge gaps and misconceptions while maintaining grade-level expectations.
- Model instruction that engages students in scientific inquiry, investigation, modeling, evidence-based reasoning, discussion, and explanation.
- Support implementation and adaptation of New Visions Science, OpenSciEd, and other science curricula.
- Analyze student work, assessment data, and classroom evidence to determine instructional next steps.
- Strengthen questioning, scientific discourse, formative assessment, scaffolding, and task design.
- Lead coaching cycles that include co-planning, modeling, classroom observation, actionable feedback, and reflection.
- Design and facilitate engaging, content-rich, intellectually rigorous professional learning.
- Develop and adapt lessons, assessments, performance tasks, exemplars, and instructional resources.
- Document coaching goals, progress, and impact clearly and professionally.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Deep content knowledge in one or more secondary science disciplines, particularly Biology and/or Earth & Space Science.
- Strong understanding of NYSSLS/NGSS and three-dimensional science instruction.
- Familiarity with the New York State Biology and/or Earth & Space Sciences Regents examinations, including the scientific reasoning, modeling, data analysis, evidence use, and written explanations students are expected to demonstrate.
- At least 3 years of experience coaching, developing, supervising, or providing instructional leadership to adult educators.
- At least 4 years of successful science teaching experience in urban public-school settings.
- Ability to move instruction beyond fact recall toward scientific reasoning, explanation, and application.
- Experience diagnosing misconceptions and designing scaffolds that preserve grade-level learning goals and intellectual demand.
- Experience using student work, assessment data, and classroom evidence to inform instructional decisions.
- Experience developing high-quality teacher resources and student-facing instructional materials.
- Strong facilitation, communication, relationship-building, and feedback skills.
- Emotional intelligence and the ability to support adult learning through clear, actionable feedback.
- A commitment to equitable, culturally responsive, and academically rigorous science instruction.
- Reliability, flexibility, integrity, and professionalism across school contexts.
A master’s degree is preferred.
Preferred Experience
Experience with one or more of the following is highly valued:
- New Visions Science
- OpenSciEd
- Phenomena-based instructional design
- Science performance tasks and three-dimensional assessment
- Supporting multilingual learners and students with disabilities in rigorous science instruction
- Facilitating professional learning for science departments or instructional leadership teams
- Chemistry and/or Physics instruction and Regents preparation
Physics expertise is a strong plus, reflecting a growing need across our school partnerships.
Time Commitment & Compensation
This is an independent contractor position. Assignments depend on school partnerships, client needs, coach expertise, and availability.
Selected coaches can expect an initial assignment of approximately 50-100 coaching days during the school year, with opportunities for additional assignments based on school contracts, performance, availability, and organizational needs.
Compensation is $600–$800 per day, based on experience, demonstrated expertise, and scope of work.
Finalists will participate in a paid pilot coaching engagement to demonstrate science content knowledge, instructional decision-making, analysis of student work, modeling of high-quality instruction, and adult coaching skills.
