Summary
The CNC Setup Machinist I is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating CNC milling machines to produce precision parts that meet quality standards. This position requires hands-on machining experience and the ability to work independently in a production environment.
This is an hourly, non-exempt position reporting to the Production Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC milling machines using conversational controls (ProtoTRAK preferred)
- Read blueprints, process sheets, and job instructions
- Machine parts to tight tolerances (up to ±.0002”)
- Edit and adjust programs as needed
- Assist with setups and processes for new parts
- Select and install tooling, fixtures, and workholding
- Adjust speeds, feeds, offsets, and tooling during production
- Inspect first-piece and in-process parts using precision measuring tools
- Troubleshoot machining and setup issues
- Maintain coolant levels and basic machine maintenance
- Prepare materials and setups for upcoming jobs
- Operate secondary equipment during cycle times when needed
- Cross-train in other machining areas
- Keep work area clean and safe
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum 1 year of CNC milling experience required
- Setup experience required
- Conversational programming experience preferred
- Ability to perform machine setups independently
- Blueprint reading and basic GD&T knowledge
- Experience holding tight tolerances
- Experience using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges
- Understanding of speeds, feeds, tooling, and offsets
- Mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Steady rest experience is a plus
- Must provide basic hand tools
Physical Requirements
- Stand for extended periods (8–10 hours)
- Lift up to 50 lbs as needed
- Frequent bending, reaching, and machine interaction required
