Position Summary/Job Duties:
The DCS Farm Assistants work under the direction of the DCS Farm Manager to plant, tend, and harvest the 1-acre farm plot at the Eagle Heights Community Garden, located in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.
- Responsible for preparing soil, planting, trellising, and weeding.
- Complete tasks such as pest management, plant thinning, composting, mowing, and tool repair.
- Harvest and deliver produce to Dining & Culinary Services using a campus vehicle.
- Plant and maintain seedlings and greens in the Leopold greenhouse during fall and spring seasons.
- Work independently and in partnership with fellow farm assistants to complete daily farm tasks.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by members of Dining & Culinary Services
Qualifications:
- Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with seeds, plants, food, or working outside.
- Preferred completion of at least one year of study in the agricultural or environmental sciences.
- Ability to lift up to 25lbs regularly.
- Ability to reach high or bend over.
- Ability to spend extended time standing, working outside in extreme hot or cold weather.
- A valid unrestricted driver's license which meets UW Risk Management standards is preferred.
