Description
The Head Farmer position is a full-time, salaried position requiring a flexible schedule including occasional evening and weekend work. As with all positions at Carrollwood Farms, the Head Farmer may be called upon to work in areas outside of the immediate area of responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Crop Production and Land Related: Oversee row crop and hay production, pasture management, and the development of native warm-season grass for quail habitats. Bush hog and otherwise manage fields not in production. When necessary repair/install fencing.
- Livestock Care: Manage a registered Akaushi beef herd, including making breeding decisions (including when to use AI), DNA collection (for registration), ear tagging, and health monitoring (in coordination with vet).
- Equipment: Operate and perform maintenance on farm equipment including tractors (up to 200hp) and attachments including balers, discs, drills, planters, and more. Manage grain storage, usage, and sales and hay storage, usage, and sales.
- Hunting: Oversee farm hunting operations (deer, turkey, and released birds), including animal processing/cleaning as needed.
- Data & Documentation: Maintain precise records for soil testing, planting/harvest dates, tissue analysis (when relevant), weather events, and sales. Track cattle birth dates, weights, and registry data.
- Leadership: Manage associate farmer schedules, provide team education, and assist other departments as required.
Qualifications
- Experience: 10 years in production agriculture with expertise in growing row crops, cover crops, and managing beef cattle.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in operating/calibrating complex farm machinery and hauling cattle trailers.
- Livestock Expertise: Proven ability to manage a registered cattle operation and make informed breeding decisions.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional project management, time management, and a "no job is too small" work ethic.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 70 lbs.
- Capable of bending, kneeling, twisting, and standing/walking for extended periods.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions, including rain.
