Ag Science Teacher Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the agricultural science program at Alba-Golden Secondary. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Candidates should possess strong work ethic, be self motivated, goal driven and passionate in delivery of course content and FFA activities. Knowledge of Ag Content a must. The position will teach primarily animal science path courses but the assignment could include (but not limited to) one or more sections of ag mech/welding. Willingness to serve as one of three FFA / Jr FFA Advisors while demonstrating: solid communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Possess ability to impact students and build relationships through FFA and Jr FFA activities. Train multiple successful LDE, CDE & SDE teams. Knowledge of record books, degrees, applications. Engage, advise and supervise SAE projects of all types traditional and beyond at county and major stock shows. Candidates should possess knowledge, commitment and interest, in developing student leaders through camps, conventions, chapter, and community activities. Assist with development of strong POA. Expectations will require early mornings, late nights, and weekends.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: Bachelor's degree from accredited university

Valid Texas career and technical education certificate with required license, endorsements, and training for subject and level assigned, or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI).

Demonstrated competency in agricultural science/career and technical education

CDL or willingness to obtain

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies

  • Oversee Supervised Agricultural Experience Program (SAEP), including assisting students in selecting and managing projects and supervising school barn.
  • Serve as advisor to the Alba-Golden FFA chapter, including planning and conducting leadership, citizenship, cooperative, career development, and competitive activities for students at local, regional, and state level.
  • Assist with planning and delivery of adult education and community programs relating to agricultural science
    and technology.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as needed and required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Educational Agency board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.

Student Growth and Development

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the
    campus principal.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create classroom environment conductive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional
    development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
  • Accompany and supervise students at all off-campus activities including contest, workshops, and field trips
    associated with the agricultural science program and FFA.
  • Oversee maintenance of program related facilities and equipment including school barn.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

Communication

  • Be available by phone, email, or video conferencing to confer with district personnel, students, and/or
    parents.
  • Communicate with students or parents on a regular basis via phone or video conference, email, or district-approved website.
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.

Budget and Inventory

  • Develop and administer budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
  • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Days for teachers to extended day contracts should include activities from the following list, but are not
    limited to these activities:
    • Accompanying students competing in weekend and/or evening competitions or activities;
    • Working with students involved in events as part of the classroom experience outside the regular school
    day;
    • Attendance at required professional development or summer program conferences;
    • Coordinating with work-based learning stakeholders and arranging for students opportunities;
    • Cleaning and/or closing labs;
    • Taking inventory of equipment;
    • Supervising student projects.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals standard instructional equipment; agricultural

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
  • Motion: Frequent walking; repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; overhead reaching
  • Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds and over); may lift and move agriculture equipment and animals
  • Environment: Work outside and inside; exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold, and inclement weather),
  • humidity, and prolonged sunlight; exposure to biological hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; work
  • around moving objects or vehicles; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; work around animals; may work alone;
  • frequent districtwide and statewide travel
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
