What We’re Looking For

WFSE is recruiting for a Council Representative position in our Seattle Field Office. This position works independently and as part of a team to coordinate and facilitate internal organizing and conduct worksite visits to engage members and offer solutions to workplace issues. Council Representatives activate membership by motivating and assisting members in coordinating workplace job actions and rallies. They interact appropriately with members to resolve workplace issues through member mobilization, both in groups and in one-to-one settings. Additionally, they schedule, advertise, and conduct workplace informational meetings.

Duties

Council Representatives conduct political grassroots organizing by scheduling, advertising, and conducting PEOPLE and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) presentations; scheduling, advertising, and conducting training for stewards, MAT Leaders, and members; and mentoring stewards. Additional duties include:

  • Utilize knowledge of various collective bargaining agreements to effectively process grievances on behalf of members.
  • Attends and presents cases to Local and Statewide Grievance Committees.
  • Represent members and attend pre-disciplinary (Loudermill) meetings and attend and present cases at the top agency step of grievance hearings.
  • Attends monthly local membership meetings and
  • Attending local and regional Union Management Communication Meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 6 months experience in labor unions, labor or community organizing, and essential personnel practices.
  • Possesses a valid Washington driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, automobile insurance, and the ability to travel are mandatory conditions of employment.
  • May be called upon to carry and move up to twenty (20) pounds; participates in activities requiring extended periods of standing and sitting, indoors and outdoors.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills by reading, writing, and communicating effectively.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • The ability to present information and speak to groups of varying sizes.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with remote meeting software such as Zoom, Teams, etc.

Special Note

  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Selected candidates are expected to live within commuting distance of their assigned work location within Washington state.
  • This position is eligible for overtime and may be required to work some weekends.
  • Travel is usually limited to the designated area of responsibility.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, use of a personal vehicle, and valid vehicle insurance.
  • A motor vehicle report and a background check will be conducted as a condition of employment.
  • Benefits include 12 paid holidays, annual and sick leave, a $150 monthly cell phone allowance, a $400 monthly vehicle allowance, medical/dental/vision, life and long-term disability insurance, 401K, Pension Plan, personal holidays, and more.
  • The salary range is $79,489 to $96,467 and will be commensurate with experience.
