Job Summary

African Services Committee (“ASC”) is a New York City-based community service organization founded in 1981 by a refugee from Ethiopia, with the mission of addressing the needs of newcomers affected by war, persecution, poverty, and global health inequalities. Our services currently include civil and immigration legal services, case management, housing assistance, English classes, HIV, STD, TB, viral hepatitis, and other disease screening and linkage to care, food pantry, community outreach, and HIV and immigration reform advocacy.

Position: Testing and Navigation Specialist

Full-time position: 40 hours per week, with substantial evening and weekend responsibilities on a flex-time basis

Work location: At least 50% in office, up to 50% in the community conducting outreach, offsite testing, and client navigation

The position is supervised by the Program Manager for Prevention and Community Health. The Testing and Navigation Specialist is responsible for recruiting, enrolling and supporting clients in HIV testing, navigation in prevention and care Services.

This position will be responsible for the implementation of outreach and education to enroll clients in testing and program activities and promote awareness and prevention as the Clinical HIV Testing Champion and contribute to coordinating clients' engagement in multiple department or agency services. They will ensure education is provided on PEP, and IART to every enrolled client. They will be responsible for entering and verifying their own client data and lead on ensuring complete program-wide data entry for analysis as the database developer/analyst.

This position will contribute to devising up-to-date, culturally relevant, accessible and engaging prevention and health promotion messaging (print, digital, and video) that promotes both the agency’s services and awareness and behavior change in the community. Some technical ability to undertake the production and design of these materials without requiring external services would be preferred.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, secure and implement opportunities to conduct outreach in the community to recruit program participants and promote wider HIV testing, PrEP and anti-stigma awareness, as well as wider agency services
  • Conducting client intakes into program and testing services
  • Contribute to administering confidential screenings, including HIV rapid and confirmatory testing
  • Providing screening results to clients in a sensitive and confidential manner
  • Offering in-person and virtual navigation services to PrEP or HIV treatment and other referrals
  • Entering complete and accurate client and program data into multiple systems
  • Analyzing data across the program for ongoing service assessment and reporting
  • Upholding all program and agency confidentiality and compliance requirements

Skills and Abilities:

  • An assertive, well-organized individual with strong communication skills
  • Precise data entry and verification skills
  • Good interpersonal skills in dealing with the community and colleagues, sensitive to and comfortable with issues related to recent immigrants, sex workers, and LGBTQ communities
  • Established relationships with populations with strong reasons for HIV prevention and services
  • Strong connection with the African community
  • Must be experienced in administering health screenings, preferably including HIV rapid tests, and be trained and certified in phlebotomy or able to quickly complete training and secure certification

Language proficiency:

  • Fluency in English and a second language (Spanish or French) required. African languages are a plus.

Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of experience in HIV community-level program prevention, testing, and/or linkage to care services
  • Commitment to public health equity
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required
  • Experience and comfortability with serving multicultural and multilingual communities
  • Experience working in a multilingual context; Fluency in an African language a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications and ability to quickly learn new software packages or platforms
  • Commitment to administrative protocols, policies, confidentiality, and the mission of African Services Committee

Pay: $55,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
