Job Description
The Silicon Valley Chapter of AFCOM is offering exciting Application and Field Service Engineer internship opportunities. Interns will gain hands-on experience working with data center controls, monitoring technologies, and field engineering activities, under the guidance of industry professionals.
Duration: 6 weeks
- First Period: Jan 2026 – Feb 2026
- Second Period: Feb 2026 – March 2026
Interns will be compensated bi-weekly by AFCOM and will be paired with an executive industry sponsor. The location placements will vary by assignment, but most facilities are in Silicon Valley, Bay Area.
As an AFCOM intern you will gain hands-on experience in
- Focus on the integration of building management system equipment into Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems.
- Designs and configures integrations to building control and electrical control systems as defined by the contract documents. Creates flow diagrams, sequence of operations, and network diagrams as required.
- Application configuration for site navigation device integration, site metrics, reports, and custom graphics creation.
- Works with BMS vendors to integrate BACnet points and alarms from field level network and global network.
- Performs start-up services and commissioning and communication troubleshooting for field devices, controllers, and networked equipment.
- Configures and commissions connected devices and 3rd party hardware.
- Documents work completed and compiles as-builts of systems.
- Participates in project meetings with project field team.
- Keeps management informed of job progress and issues.
- Able to work at customer site. Most work occurs at Bay Area customer sites. Limited travel may be required depending on project assignment.
Compensation
Students will be paid $20 per hour with a maximum earning of $4,800. Overtime is not included in the internship and must be approved through the AFCOM internship committee. Students will be sent a 1099 at the end of the year and will be responsible for their own taxes.
Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must:
- High School, College Students, & Military Graduate.
- Submit a completed W-9 form, including SSN.
Desired Skills:
- Technical Degree or Certifications in Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Controls, Electronics or Equivalent.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret specifications and electrical drawing packages.
- Solid understanding of basic TCP/IP networking.
- Experience with native and proprietary BACnet systems.
- Exposure to or interest in systems using Modbus, SNMP, IEC-61850, and BACnet (ASHRAE Standard 135) communications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledgeable in computer networking architectures, topologies, and hardware.
- Experience with Schneider Electric PME/PSO is a plus but not required.
- Niagara AX/N4 experience or interest is a plus but not required.
- Knowledge of and strategies for Internet Data Center Environments.
- Strong work ethic.
- High energy and desire to learn.
- Engineering disciplines not limited to Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural, Civil, and Management Operations.
Note: Prior experience with these systems is not required — training and mentorship will be provided.
