Applications Engineer Region: Western United States (CA / Pacific Northwest) Position Summary: This role supports advanced CNC machining environments by providing technical expertise across programming, process development, system optimization, and end-user support. The position focuses on helping manufacturing teams improve performance, reduce downtime, and adopt best practices in CNC-based production. Travel to customer facilities is required on a recurring but non-continuous basis. Primary Functions: Manufacturing Process Support:Serve as a technical advisor for CNC machining processes in production and job-shop environments.Assist customers with resolving machining challenges related to cycle time, part quality, and machine utilization.CNC System Deployment:Support the startup and configuration of CNC equipment, including parameter adjustment and application-specific setup.Validate machine readiness for production through testing and process verification.Programming & Process Improvement:Write, edit, and optimize CNC programs for a wide range of machining applications.Analyze machining processes and recommend improvements related to tooling, feeds/speeds, and machine strategies.Troubleshoot control-level, mechanical, and software-related issues affecting performance.Training & Technical Enablement:Deliver hands-on and classroom-style instruction covering CNC operation, programming concepts, and maintenance fundamentals.Support knowledge transfer to customer teams to ensure long-term success and safe operation.Technical Documentation:Prepare application notes, setup instructions, and process documentation to support consistent machining outcomes.Equipment Evaluation & Application Validation:Conduct application trials, prove-outs, and live demonstrations of CNC machining solutions.Communicate findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders involved in product development and support.Internal Coordination:Collaborate with commercial, service, and engineering groups to define technical approaches aligned with customer requirements.Industry & Technology Awareness:Track emerging trends in CNC controls, machining techniques, tooling technology, and automation.Apply new concepts to improve application effectiveness and customer results. Candidate Profile Education & TrainingDegree in engineering, manufacturing technology, or a related technical discipline preferred.Equivalent industry experience or specialized technical certifications considered.Professional Experience10 or more years of experience working directly with CNC machining systems in a manufacturing, applications, or process engineering capacity.Technical CapabilitiesAdvanced knowledge of CNC programming and control logic (G-code, M-code, common industrial controls).Hands-on experience with milling, turning, and multi-axis machining platforms.Strong understanding of cutting mechanics, tool selection, workholding, and material properties.Proven troubleshooting skills across machining processes and CNC equipment.Familiarity with CAM programming workflows and CAD data interpretation.Experience with automated machining systems or robotic integration is beneficial but not required.Professional AttributesStrong problem-solving and analytical skills.Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to varied audiences.Comfortable working independently in customer-facing environments.Capable of supporting multiple projects across different locations.
