Job Summary:
Leads and manages the operations of the Blood Bank, ensuring the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of all departmental services. Provides overall direction and supervision of departmental staff, including recruitment, training, performance management, and development. Oversees departmental budgeting, supply management, policies and procedures, quality assurance, and compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. Collaborates with pathologists, directors, and laboratory leadership to align blood bank services with organizational goals. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required
- Master's Degree: Preferred
- Five years’ clinical laboratory experience, including blood bank/transfusion services: Preferred
- Two year's leadership experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or equivalent state licensure: Required
- Certification in Blood Banking (ASCP or equivalent): Preferred
Essential Functions:
- Oversees and administers medical and technical policies, processes, and procedures for blood bank operations, including test performance, consultative services, and patient/donor safety. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laboratory and transfusion medicine best practices, regulations, and accreditation standards; ensures departmental compliance at all times.
- Directs the financial management of the Blood Bank, including budgeting, cost control, charge capture, billing, and compliance with all payer requirements.
- Provides leadership for departmental quality assurance and quality control programs; reviews patient and QC results, monitors trends, and ensures corrective action as needed.
- Manages staffing levels, assignments, and schedules to ensure adequate coverage and optimal departmental operations; provides training, feedback, and performance evaluations. Investigates laboratory issues, identifies root causes, and implements process improvements to enhance service quality and safety.
- Collaborates with pathologists, directors, laboratory managers, and other leaders to develop and implement long-term goals for blood bank and laboratory services across the system. Supports departmental and site-level operational alignment and ensures business continuity through collaboration with other laboratory managers.
