Position Overview

A well-established engineering and energy solutions organization is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead large, complex capital projects within the power generation sector.

This position is best suited for a mechanical engineer who has transitioned into project management and can combine strong technical knowledge with commercial, financial, and schedule ownership.

The successful candidate will manage projects from early planning and engineering through procurement, fabrication, construction, installation, start-up, and commissioning. The role requires strong financial discipline, customer management, schedule control, scope management, and the ability to coordinate internal engineering teams, outside vendors, contractors, and other third-party resources.

Experience supporting large capital boiler, steam-generation, or utility power projects is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead multiple complex engineering and construction projects from award through final completion.
• Establish and manage project scope, objectives, milestones, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
• Take ownership of project financial performance, including:
• Budget management
• Cost forecasting
• Financial analysis
• Margin protection
• Change management
• Project expenditures
• Develop and maintain detailed project schedules and execution plans.
• Identify critical-path activities, project dependencies, resource constraints, and schedule risks.
• Coordinate cross-functional project teams consisting of Engineering, Procurement, Manufacturing, Construction, Quality, Finance, and field resources.
• Manage third-party engineering firms, suppliers, fabricators, contractors, and other external resources.
• Serve as the primary customer contact for all matters related to:
• Technical requirements
• Commercial issues
• Schedule
• Cost
• Scope
• Project execution
• Build and maintain strong customer relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
• Identify scope changes and develop, negotiate, and execute change orders and supplemental work.
• Continuously evaluate project risks and proactively resolve technical, commercial, financial, and schedule-related issues.
• Prepare and present regular project status reports to customers, senior management, and internal stakeholders.
• Monitor project performance against established cost, schedule, and quality objectives.
• Manage contractual issues and claims through timely resolution.
• Partner with Procurement leadership to develop project sourcing and purchasing strategies.
• Review and approve major project purchases and supplier commitments.
• Ensure project quality requirements are incorporated throughout engineering, fabrication, construction, and commissioning activities.
• Support project planning for start-up, commissioning, turnover, and final customer acceptance.
• Provide leadership and direction to project team members and assigned technical resources.

Technical Focus

Candidates should bring a strong mechanical engineering foundation and experience supporting complex capital equipment or infrastructure projects.

The ideal candidate understands both the technical requirements of large mechanical systems and the financial/commercial realities of executing multimillion-dollar capital projects.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Management, or a related discipline.
• Approximately 5–10 years of project management experience within an engineering, construction, industrial, or capital-equipment environment.

• Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional technical teams.
• Strong customer-facing and client-management experience.
• Experience managing external suppliers, contractors, engineering partners, and third-party resources.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining control of project cost, schedule, quality, and customer expectations.
• Strong communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Mechanical Engineering background strongly preferred.
• Experience within power generation, utility, boiler, steam, or heavy industrial projects.
• Experience managing large capital boiler projects for utility customers.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
• Experience managing projects from engineering through construction, start-up, and commissioning.

Work Location

Massachusetts – Office-Based

This position requires the individual to work from the company's Massachusetts office.

Compensation

Base salary up to approximately $160,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
