Duties
- Conduct patient intake by collecting comprehensive medical histories and updating electronic health records (EHR) with accurate information.
- Measure vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation to assist in clinical assessments.
- Perform ophthalmic testing procedures including tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), A-scan biometry, and visual acuity assessments to aid diagnosis.
- Assist with clinical examinations by preparing patients and operating specialized medical equipment with aseptic technique to prevent infection.
- Support ophthalmologists during examinations and procedures by handling medical instruments and ensuring patient comfort throughout the process.
- Manage clinical confidentiality policies diligently while handling sensitive medical records and documentation in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Provide direct patient care by explaining procedures, answering questions, and ensuring a positive experience during clinic visits.
- Maintain clinic equipment such as slit lamps, autorefractors, and other optical devices through proper operation and routine calibration.
- Assist with administrative tasks including appointment scheduling within electronic medical record (EMR) systems like Epic or similar platforms, front desk duties, and retail sales of optical products when applicable.
- Support pediatric patients during eye exams by adapting techniques to ensure cooperation and comfort.
Requirements
- Proven experience in an ophthalmology or optometry clinic setting with knowledge of optical procedures and equipment operation.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology related to the eye, and clinical confidentiality policies.
- Ability to perform essential ophthalmic tests such as tonometry, A-scan biometry, visual acuity testing, and other diagnostic procedures accurately.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) management systems like Epic or EMR systems for documentation and scheduling purposes.
- Excellent patient care skills with a focus on direct interaction, empathy, and professionalism across diverse patient populations including pediatrics.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure compliance with privacy standards at all times.
- Experience in medical billing or coding is a plus but not required; a willingness to learn is valued.
- Strong organizational skills for managing multiple responsibilities efficiently within a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Retail math skills for optical product sales are advantageous but not mandatory; enthusiasm for providing excellent customer service is essential.
