The Hair & Make-Up Artist is responsible for creating and maintaining the desired look of talent based on the script and Director’s vision. The Hair & Make-Up Artist collaborates closely with clients and crew to understand the visual requirements of the scene, translating creative concepts into practical hair and makeup designs. The Hair & Make-Up Artist provides their knowledge and expertise to help address specific challenges with regards to the talent’s visual aesthetic.
Essential Functions:
- Create and design appropriate hairstyle and makeup looks based on the script and directorial vision.
- Collaborate with Producers, Directors, and clients to understand and execute the desired visual aesthetic for each actor and scene.
- Ensure consistent appearance of talent across scenes, shooting days, and non-linear filming through documentation and communication with the production team.
- Quickly adapt makeup and hairstyling to various lighting conditions to achieve the desired look.
- Effectively communicate with talent to understand preferences, sensitivities, and maintain a collaborative working relationship.
- Adapt to unexpected challenges, such as weather conditions, costume changes, and alterations to an actor’s look during filming.
- Skillfully work with a diverse range of actors, considering different skin tones, textures, and individual styles.
- Stay informed about the latest makeup technology, trends, and products to incorporate innovative techniques.
- Work efficiently within tight schedules, allowing for quick transformations between shots and accommodating last-minute changes
- Adherence to strict sanitation and hygiene practices to maintain cleanliness and prevent skin reactions or contamination from makeup products and tools.
- Stand and move for extended periods during makeup and hairstyling sessions, both in studio and on-location production environments.
- Maintain physical mobility and flexibility to comfortably access talent, makeup kits, tools, lighting, and mirrors without obstruction.
- Utilize strong visual acuity and precise color perception to accurately assess and apply makeup in accordance with varying skin tones, textures, and lighting conditions.
Required Education and Experience:
- 3 years of professional experience in hair and makeup for film, television, or commercial production environments.
- Demonstrated expertise in a wide range of makeup and hairstyling techniques, including corrective, special effects, and period-specific styles.
- Proficiency working with diverse skin tones, hair types, and facial structures.
- Strong portfolio showcasing previous work across various production styles and formats.
- Formal training or certification in cosmetology, makeup artistry, or related field preferred.
- Knowledge of industry-standard sanitation practices, product safety, and hygiene protocols.
- Familiarity with production workflows and on-set etiquette, with the ability to adapt to fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- Part-time, hourly, as needed for projects.
- Must be flexible to alternate between daytime, nighttime, and weekend hours, based on schedules
Compensation & Benefits:
The compensation range for this position $40-$55/hour.
