PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Plans and supervise production operations in the Machining Department in accordance with company policies, manufacturing procedures and methods, product requirements, quality standards and production schedules. Coordinates and oversees product flow through the assigned department to ensure efficiency and productivity in support of overall AST goals and objectives.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Directs the work of CNC machining operators by assigning/re-assigning workstations and analyzing production methods to increase efficiency and assure achievement of established goals for quantity and quality.
- Schedules and adjusts schedules to achieve optimum utilization of employees, skills and equipment and to assure timely response to priority orders.
- Monitors set ups, interprets work orders and approves computer programs on department equipment.
- Analyzes and resolves problems associated with machinery and tooling, providing technical assistance as needed.
- Oversees machine setup and programming procedures for (CNC and G-Code) machining centers.
- Maintains controls in compliance with specifications and quality standards of manufactured parts.
- Consults with quality and engineering to resolve machining quality problems.
- Trains and cross-trains operators in the technical skills of job assignments including machine operations, setup, quality and departmental procedures.
- Provides cost data and cost estimates for use in preparation of departmental budgets.
- Devises and implements improved production methods, reductions of setup times and efficiencies in handling of raw stock and work in progress. Conducts safety meetings and trains operators in safe handling of materials and safe operation of machines, tools and equipment.
- Enforces rules covering use of protective gear and housekeeping in work areas.
- Schedules general maintenance to equipment and orders departmental supplies, tools and equipment.
- Drives forklift and operates overhead crane as needed to position and transport parts and materials.
- Compiles data and prepares departmental recaps and reports on production, quality and related information.
- Coordinates with personnel from all departments in determining needs for parts. Adjusts manufacturing schedules to assure timely response to requirements and priorities.
- Investigate accidents and reports on findings. Make recommendations for preventative measures.
- Lays out jobs to be processed on various machines in cooperation with manufacturing engineers.
- Administers plant rules and disciplinary policies.
- Performs annual performance reviews of subordinates and. Formulates and monitors performance improvement plans.
- Maintains good housekeeping standards in assigned area.
- Performs all duties following established safety procedures and guidelines using assigned safety equipment.
- Performs other duties as required.

Requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Must possess expert skills in work layout, machine setup and operation as they apply to CNC machining and milling equipment. Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, changing orders and technical instruction manuals. You must know all processes and procedures within the assigned area, be skilled in the use of this equipment and familiar with the tooling used. Requires the ability to make alterations and adjustments to machines and CNC programs. Must have skill in identification and resolution of machine and operating problems. Requires understanding of manufacturing technology, methods of cost control and close adherence to quality standards. Must know and be able to apply the functions and duties of supervision, including the training and guidance of those supervised. Must have a thorough understanding of plant policies and procedures and their administration. You must know shop mathematics, geometry and the characteristics of various metals and metal forms. Must know and apply basic principles of industrial and manufacturing engineering. You must have good communication skills. Requires skill in the use of electric overhead crane and must be certified in the operation of a forklift.
