Electrical Engineering Technician

Location: In Person — 4620 Henry St, Pittsburgh, PA

Company: Advanced Optronics Inc.

Team Size: 5

Overview

Are you ready to help develop a revolutionary medical sensor technology from the ground up? We are an innovative seed-stage startup that builds microscopic medical sensors 10x thinner than a human hair that go inside life-changing medical devices. We are looking for a hands-on technician to assemble, package, and test these sensors at the bench. You will be a critical contributor to our R&D operations, responsible for turning components into working prototypes. This role requires steady hands, meticulous attention to detail, critical thinking to fabricate and analyze sensor systems, and who continuously learns and enjoys taking things apart to understand how they work.

Job Type / Compensation

  • Contract-to-hire, 3 month contract period, with intention to convert to full-time.
  • Compensation: ($22–$30/hr, depending on experience).
  • Full-time benefits: equity, health insurance, and PTO.

Roles & Responsibilities

1. Microdevice Assembly & Bonding (30%): Prepare components and fixtures, operate precision assembly tooling, and perform alignment and bonding of small-scale devices under a camera-mounted microscope.

2. Device Testing and Analysis (30%): Use benchtop electrical characterization tools (e.g. LCR meter, potentiostat) for quality control of critical processes. Identify performance characteristics and tie them to underlying variables to spot process drift and optimize parameters.

3. Electrochemical Processing & Packaging (20%): Prepare chemical solutions, load samples into electrochemical cells, operate precision electronic equipment, and perform cleaning, testing, and carrier packaging.

4. Documentation & Process Feedback (20%): Complete batch records for each device. Flag process deviations, yield issues, or failure modes and contribute observations and solutions to discussions with the engineering team to drive process refinements.

Candidate ProfileEducational & Experience:

  • No specific degree requirements. Candidates with a Bachelors or Associates degree in mechanical, mechatronics, electronics, or related fields, or equivalent work experience are encouraged to apply.
  • We welcome applications from candidates in adjacent fields, e.g., machining, electronics repair, lab techs, PC building, 3D printing/makerspace work.
  • Demonstrated hands-on building, repair, or lab experience

Required Technical Skills:

  • Basic Lab Practices: Comfort with standard lab safety (PPE, chemical handling) and basic bench tools (tweezers, scalpels, pipettes), as well as soldering and assembly.
  • Debugging: Be able to tie observations to underlying causes (e.g., cure time, fixture wear, or handling), come up with tests to isolate process parameters and brainstorm workarounds.
  • SOP Execution: Ability to follow detailed written procedures precisely and reproducibly, with careful attention to process parameters and in-process checks.
  • Organization: Able to track small parts, in-process inventory, and batch documentation without losing or mixing up samples.

Desired Technical Skills:

  • Experience with ESD-sensitive handling, or microscope-based assembly workflows.
  • 3D Printing and post-processing for making and modifying jigs and fixtures.

Project & Communication Skills

  • Meticulous & Patient: You take pride in your work and don't cut corners.
  • Natural Problem-Solver: You have technical curiosity, notice problems, and investigate.
  • An Excellent Communicator: You can clearly articulate your observations and theories about yields, failure modes, and process quirks to a diverse, interdisciplinary team.

The leadership team at Advanced Optronics is committed to the growth of team members. You will benefit from direct mentorship of our R&D engineers and exposure to the full device development lifecycle.

Our environment is built on collaboration and excellence, creating a space where individuals are challenged and supported to achieve their full potential.
