We are currently looking for a Department Manager for the Organics department at our AEL Jacksonville, FL laboratory. This hire will join our rapidly growing team to support our mission of delivery high quality environmental data for our clients across the United States
Job Description:
Full-time position in the organics department to execute preparations and analysis of samples for drinking water, wastewater, soil and other matrices using GC and GC/MS. Testing may include pesticides, EDBs, PCBs, FL PRO, BNAs, HAAs, PAHs, VOCs, THMs, and SOCs.
Knowledge & Skills Required:
- Bachelor Degree in any science field (Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, etc.) or higher education
- Previous laboratory experience (environmental preferred)
- Knowledge of principles, terminology, practices, techniques and instrumentation commonly used in a laboratory setting
- Ability to effectively prioritize work and manage time to meet deadlines and rush orders
- Computer literacy
- Records observations, calculations and results, accurately.
- Ability to work with delicate laboratory equipment
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal format
- Management experience
- Experience with TurboChrom, Horizon LIMS, Shimadzu GC/MS and PerkinElmer GC
- Experience performing extractions/prep for some but not all of the following EPA test methods is a plus: 8011, 8270, 8081, 8082, 625, 608, FL PRO
- Proficiency with LIMS, laboratory workflow, and TNI/NELAP requirements
- Thorough understanding of laboratory accreditation, quality assurance programs, and proficiency testing
- Experience with gas chromatography (GC) and/or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
- Experience with solid phase extraction (SPE)
- Experience with instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the timely setup of methods and samples on instruments as measured by Thruput and TAT
- Collaborates with management to develop, prepare, and implement quality and safety policies and procedures
- Implements strategic business initiatives with the objective of consistently producing accurate test results
- Conducts SOP development, review, edit and as needed
- Manages MDLs and DOCs and assures completion throughout lab as required
- Understands operation and theory of all instrumentation in lab
- Responsible for troubleshooting, performing preventive maintenance and repairs on instruments as needed
- Effectively manages staff performance; one-on-one meetings, evaluations, and training.
- Coaches and mentors staff and facilitates their personal and professional growth
- Performs data review in Horizon LIMS and assigns peer review groups
- Schedules department work days and hours for all analysts to comply with operational, method, regulatory and client requirements
- Tracks supplies and places purchase orders for/with the Lab Manager
- Assists with duties to manage Health and Safety and Hazardous Waste program
- Develops methods for new analyses
- Special projects, research, method performance improvements
- Attend and provide updates for daily status meetings
- Helps in the process of hiring and training both new and existing employees
- Works with other DMs in network
- Provides timely responses to internal and external inquiries related to quality and production
- Maintains high data quality, works with QA and performs well in audits
- Establish and maintain effective communication with staff
Schedule:
Full-time position. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00 pm; Operations Hours 7 am to 7 pm, 7 days a week. Work can occasionally include weekends, evenings and holidays in peak production times. Complete work schedule will be discussed with applicant during interview.
