Entry-Level Field Technician / Courier
Fort Myers, Florida | Full-Time | $18–$21 per hour
Build a career in environmental field services
Start with client service and sample transportation, then cross-train to perform basic environmental sampling events such as taps and grab samples. No prior environmental sampling experience is required.
About the Opportunity
Advanced Environmental Laboratories, Inc. (AEL) is seeking a dependable, career-minded employee who enjoys working independently, being outdoors, and providing excellent client service. This combined position supports both laboratory courier routes and entry-level field sampling activities.
You will be trained from the ground up. Initial responsibilities will focus on safely picking up and delivering samples, supplies, and sample kits. As training and demonstrated competency progress, the position will also support basic sampling events, including taps and grab samples. This approach provides broader experience, greater day-to-day variety, and a pathway to grow within AEL’s field services operations.
What You Will Do
- Pick up and deliver environmental samples, sample kits, supplies, and related materials between clients and AEL laboratories.
- Plan efficient routes and respond promptly to scheduled and time-sensitive service requests.
- Follow sample handling, transportation, chain-of-custody, safety, and documentation requirements.
- Confirm sample and container information during pickups and communicate discrepancies or client changes to laboratory staff.
- Complete accurate records of travel, mileage, fuel, client visits, pickups, deliveries, and field activities.
- Cross-train to perform basic sampling events, including taps and grab samples, after required training and competency demonstration.
- Prepare basic sampling supplies and equipment, complete field records, and deliver collected samples to the laboratory safely and on time.
- Communicate scheduling, access, weather, equipment, or other issues that could affect completion of an assigned route or sampling event.
- Maintain assigned vehicles, field supplies, and equipment in a clean, safe, and ready condition, and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Represent AEL professionally and courteously as a client-facing liaison between customers and laboratory staff.
- Follow all AEL driver policies, certifications, safe-driving expectations, and applicable transportation requirements.
- Complete other related duties and cross-training activities assigned by local management.
What We Are Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Reliable, punctual, safety-minded, and comfortable driving for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete clear, accurate documentation.
- Professional communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and adapt to changing schedules and field conditions.
- Interest in learning environmental sampling and developing broader field-service capabilities.
- Ability to work outdoors and perform the physical duties of the position, including lifting and carrying sampling materials and coolers.
- Previous courier, customer service, environmental, utility, construction, or field experience is helpful but not required.
Training and Growth
AEL will provide structured on-the-job training for courier procedures, client service, sample handling, documentation, safe vehicle operation, and assigned basic sampling activities. Employees may receive additional cross-training based on operational needs, demonstrated competency, and career interests. The purpose of the combined role is to build practical field capability while allowing experienced field sampling personnel to focus on specialized and higher-value work.
Schedule and Work Conditions
- Typical laboratory schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
- Operational needs may require an earlier start, later finish, overtime, or occasional weekend or holiday work.
- Daily travel and in-person client or project-site work are required.
- Work may include outdoor conditions, driving, standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing stairs, and handling sampling supplies and coolers.
- AEL conducts background checks for all positions.
