Description of Work

Reporting to the Housing Unit Manager III, this position is responsible for assisting the Correctional Housing Unit Manager III in the management and operations of an institutional housing unit within a medium/close custody facility. Job responsibilities include; but are not limited to, the following:

- Monitoring of the unit case management system which entails providing individual counseling, participating in group sessions, and maintaining reports related to the offender’s progress.
- Coordinating program staff, supervising custody staff, and in the absence of the supervisor, assuming responsibility of the management of the unit.
- Serving on institution classification committees.
- Assisting supervisor with training, scheduling and adjusting work schedules.
- Reviewing work of staff through review of use of force and incident reports, grievance investigations, classification actions, and daily activity reports, and the case management system.
- Assigning work to subordinates utilizing standard operation procedures.
- Reviewing housing inspections performed by custody staff, and disciplinary investigations.
- Counseling staff as needed and give oral and first written warning.

Salary Range: $39,244.00.00-$68,679.00

This is an anticipated vacancy. Position 65005344 is expected to be available June 1, 2026.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Supervisory skills in a prison.
  • Knowledge of facility operations.
  • Knowledge of Prison’s policy and procedures.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Supportive counseling skills.       

Necessary Special QualificationsMay require General Instructor Certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

Tabor Correctional Institution is located in Tabor City, North Carolina and houses up to 1,752 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.
