Assistant Editor
The Star Democrat | Easton, Maryland
The Star Democrat is seeking an assistant editor to help prepare accurate, complete and timely news coverage for print and online publication. This position may be performed remotely and requires availability primarily working afternoons and evenings. The ideal candidate will work fulltime 37.5-40 hours per week, or until the job is completed. The salary range is $50,000–$55,000/year. We will consider applicants who prefer a part-time role working remotely.
The assistant editor will work closely with reporters, newsroom staff and the regional editor to edit stories, prepare content for print, proof pages and keep the website and newsletters current. The successful candidate will have strong news judgment, an eye for detail and the ability to manage deadlines in a collaborative newsroom.
Responsibilities
- Copy edit news stories and other content for accuracy, clarity, grammar, punctuation and AP style.
- Review stories for completeness, balance and appropriate attribution, and work with reporters to address questions or gaps.
- Prepare print content for page layout and proof pages before publication.
- Write newsletter introductions and help prepare newsletters for distribution.
- Monitor the website to ensure stories are placed appropriately and content is kept up to date.
- Help write or edit breaking news stories for immediate online publication as needed.
- Coordinate with newsroom staff to meet daily and early holiday deadlines.
Qualifications
- Strong copy editing and proofreading skills, with familiarity with AP style.
- Sound news judgment and a commitment to accurate, fair and balanced reporting.
- Familiarity with BLOX CMS or a similar content management system.
- Comfort using Google Drive to share and manage files.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with a team in a remote setting.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.
- Availability to work afternoons and early evenings, with flexibility to meet occasional early deadlines around holidays.
