JOB DESCRIPTION: Custodian

LOCATION: Primarily stationed at Serengeti Springs Waterpark and the Hattiesburg Zoo. Work may involve movement between both properties as needed.

SHIFT: Full‑time; varies based on operational needs of the waterpark and zoo. Weekends, holidays, and peak seasons require flexible and reliable scheduling. Extended hours may be necessary to meet guest and event requirements.

SUMMARY: Performs daily cleaning tasks, routine maintenance, and minor repairs. Provides porter support during events and ensures all guest‑facing and operational areas remain clean, safe, and presentable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Confers daily with Manager or Supervisor to review assignments for Serengeti Springs and the Hattiesburg Zoo.
• Performs custodial tasks including sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, vacuuming, spot cleaning, washing, and floor care (stripping/waxing as needed).
• Researches, orders, and maintains janitorial equipment and supplies; reports equipment malfunctions promptly.
• Identifies and reports building components or areas needing repair.
• Performs minor repairs such as painting, patching, replacing light fixtures, and changing filters.
• Conducts daily inspections of assigned areas prior to meeting with Manager or Supervisor.
• Maintains a written inspection log.
• Assists other facility personnel as directed.
• Carries an operational two‑way radio or pager at all times.
• Conducts pre‑event inspections and maintains written checklists.
• Performs event clean‑up as required.
• Ensures facilities are cleaned and vacuumed; furniture dusted; chairs and tables arranged as requested.
• Provides janitorial and porter service during events.
• Immediately reports any damages resulting from events or guest activity.
• Maintains a time‑management log for weekly reporting.
• Performs other duties, functions, and special projects as assigned. May run errands as needed; travel between zoo and waterpark required.
• And other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Two years of experience in cleaning a public assembly facility, theme park, zoo, waterpark, or similar environment preferred.
• Formal training in current janitorial procedures and practices preferred.
• Combination of education and experience may be evaluated.

Essential Job Qualifications

• Must retain a valid Driver’s License and meet eligibility requirements to drive while conducting company business.
• Must have reliable transportation for required travel between facilities.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to read fine print such as labels.
• Ability to speak and hear clearly in person and via radio/telephone.
• Physical stamina and mobility to bend, squat, lift, reach, carry, stand, and walk for extended periods.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
• Manual dexterity to operate small tools.
• Ability to work in outdoor conditions including heat, cold, humidity, and exposure to cleaning agents, dust, and dirt.

Knowledge and Skills

• Ability to follow instructions and perform routine tasks without immediate supervision.
• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, guests, and facility users.
