Interim Print Services Manager
Department: Auxiliary Document Management – Print Services
Reports To: Operations Manager
Work Schedule: Minimum 40 hours per week; extended hours as operationally required
Position is estimated to last for approximately 20 weeks
Position Summary
The Print Services Manager serves as the hands-on technical and operational leader of a full-service production print environment. This position is responsible for overseeing daily production operations while actively participating in equipment operation, troubleshooting, workflow optimization, and quality control.
The Manager provides leadership across digital production, wide format printing, CNC routing, laser engraving, finishing, and web-to-print storefront operations. This role requires advanced technical knowledge, strong Microsoft Excel proficiency, and financial acumen to support reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and performance analysis.
This position is accountable for supporting departmental revenue targets, operational efficiency, and cost management initiatives. The Manager is expected to maintain an active presence on the production floor and lead by example in both technical execution and staff development.
Essential Responsibilities
Production & Technical Leadership (Hands-On Role)
- Actively operate and troubleshoot digital production presses
- Provide hands-on oversight of wide format flatbed and roll systems
- Operate and manage Colex digital finishing equipment
- Operate and manage Laguna CNC cutter workflows
- Oversee laser engraving and specialty production services
- Review file setup, imposition, RIP workflow, and color management
- Assist with complex job setups, specialty substrates, and finishing requirements
- Maintain quality standards and ensure adherence to service-level agreements (SLAs)
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and reduce equipment downtime
This role requires daily engagement in production activities.
Financial, Revenue & Data Management
- Support achievement of annual revenue targets for Print Services
- Develop and maintain Excel-based operational and financial reports
- Track revenue, production volume, cost-per-piece, margin performance, and productivity metrics
- Assist with annual budget planning and forecasting
- Conduct variance analysis and identify improvement opportunities
- Review vendor invoices and monitor cost controls
- Identify insourcing opportunities and revenue growth strategies
- Implement operational efficiencies to improve margin performance
Website & Storefront Management
- Manage and maintain web-to-print storefront platform (e.g., Pressero or similar)
- Configure products, pricing, metadata, and workflows aligned with revenue goals
- Collaborate with IT on domain configuration, SSO, and ADA compliance initiatives
- Improve digital ordering processes and workflow automation
- Ensure alignment between online ordering and production execution
Staff Leadership & Development
- Supervise and mentor Print Services staff
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching
- Lead hiring, onboarding, and training efforts
- Develop cross-training plans to ensure operational continuity
- Promote safety, accountability, and customer service excellence
Client Engagement & Strategic Growth
- Provide consultative support to campus stakeholders
- Identify opportunities to expand services and reduce outsourced printing
- Support strategic initiatives aligned with Auxiliary Enterprises goals
- Contribute to long-term operational and revenue growth planning
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on production print experience
- Minimum 3 years supervisory or lead experience
- Demonstrated technical proficiency in digital production presses, wide format systems, CNC routing (Laguna or similar), Colex finishing systems, and laser engraving operations
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, reporting, data analysis)
- Experience managing or supporting web-to-print storefront platforms
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in higher education or institutional print environments
- Experience with Canon production and wide format equipment
- Knowledge of budgeting and financial forecasting
- Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement experience
