Position Purpose
The Director of Secondary Schools provides strategic leadership and oversight for all middle and high school programs (grades 6–12). This position is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and school improvement efforts across secondary schools. The Director supports and develops school leaders, aligns district resources to instructional priorities, and ensures compliance with district, state, and federal policies. The role serves as a key liaison between central office, school administrators, staff, parents, and the community to promote high levels of student achievement and continuous improvement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises and directs all aspects of secondary (middle and high school) curriculum and instructional programming.
- Evaluates, supervises, and coaches secondary school principals to strengthen leadership capacity and improve student outcomes.
- Advises and supports principals and assistant principals in the implementation of effective instructional practices and school management.
- Coordinates and facilitates regular secondary principal meetings to communicate expectations, share best practices, and ensure alignment.
- Directs the implementation and monitoring of aligned instructional resources, including curriculum guides, shared materials, technology platforms, and Learning Management Systems.
- Collaborates with Testing and Accountability to develop, implement, and monitor formative, benchmark, and summative assessments for grades 6–12, including oversight of data systems and applications.
- Leads the implementation of district policies and legislative initiatives impacting secondary teaching and learning.
- Serves as the central office point of contact for parents of students in grades 6–12 and conducts investigations related to school-level concerns and complaints.
- Ensures timely and professional communication with teachers, principals, and stakeholders via phone, email, and other correspondence.
- Manages the Driver’s Education PRC 012 budget in accordance with district and state guidelines.
- Oversees student registration and scheduling processes for grades 6–12, including annual updates to the High School Registration Handbook.
- Maintains and updates middle and high school webpages on the district website to ensure accurate and accessible information.
- Serves on the District Crisis Team and supports emergency response planning and implementation.
- Participates in and supports the District Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Team.
- Co-facilitates the district Grading Policy Committee to ensure consistency and alignment in grading practices.
- Co-facilitates district Learning Walks (K–12) to monitor instructional practices and support continuous improvement.
- Serves on interview committees for the hiring of principals and assistant principals.
- Develops, coordinates, and delivers professional development opportunities for secondary staff (grades 6–12).
- Co-facilitates leadership development programs, including the Teacher Leader Academy and Assistant Principal Leadership initiatives.
- Reviews and approves requests for district research projects in alignment with district priorities.
- Serves on various district and community committees to support organizational goals and initiatives.
- Attends and participates in local, state, and national professional development to remain current on best practices and educational trends.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree in Educational Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field.
Experience
Three to five years of successful principal experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Middle and/or high school teaching and/or administrative experience preferred
Certification
Must hold or be eligible for appropriate North Carolina administrative licensure as required by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

- Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum development, instructional strategies, and student assessment systems.
- Knowledge of state and federal accountability systems affecting public education.
- Ability to analyze educational data and develop strategies to improve student achievement.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with administrators, staff, board members, and community stakeholders.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate administrative personnel.
Physical Requirements
Work is typically performed in office, school, and meeting environments. The employee must be able to:
- Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Use hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment.
- Communicate effectively in person and electronically.
- Occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.
- Travel to schools, district offices, and professional meetings as required.
Terms of Employment
Employment is for twelve (12) months. Salary and benefits are established by the Rockingham County Board of Education.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in accordance with Board policy and administrative evaluation procedures.
